Surely is an elm.  If correct, the latewood pores on the end grain should be arranged in distinct wavy bands.

Once an elm always an elm  :).

We can all guess or we can look at defining characteristics to verify if it is an elm or not,.  With the information given, the potential diagnosis will be confirmed by examining the end grain.  Or not.
