Anybody out there having decent luck with one? Our's just bit the dust, so to speak. This latest decedent is a Eureka, but we've been through Hoovers and Dirt Devils, etc, and can't seem to get one to last over 2 years. I really hate to spend several hundred dollars for something so simple and mundane.
My Sears shop vac is about 20 years old, course don't know how well the wife would like toting it around. Wife bought some kind of commerical vac and didn't tell me the price. Besides I don't think I want to know.
Dyson.
You won't know how you've lived without it.
A friend has a Dyson, and swears by it to. I think that'll be next one.
Tell ya how "out west" I must be. Taint never heard of a Dyson.
My wife has had her Kirby since Dec. of 73.

I'm with Haytrader on this one. I have never even heard of a Dyson. Of course I try VERY HARD not to know too much about any cleaning appliances. I am allergic to most things that have to do with cleaning. ;D I break out in hives and a cold sweat when they are even mentioned.
We have an Electrolux we bought about 12 years ago and it works great. We bought that one to replace the one I had gotten from my Mom. She bought that one in 1965 and it was in use until 1993 whan we replaced it.
My wife bought a Dyson, off the web, saved a hundred or so. Anyway, run any vacuum over a rug, then run the Dyson, more stuff comes out, then run the Dyson at right angles to the first run, more stuff comes out. She swears by it after Kirbys, Filterqueens, Rainbow, and God alone knows how many others.
Red Devil and Bisel are they the same?) have come out with a copy of the Dyson, dont know on price.,
I've had my Rainbow Cleaner for 15 years. It uses water as a filter and I have allergy problems, so I'm thrilled with it. It doesn't blow dust back into the air....the dust gets trapped in the water. I've never had to replace any of the parts and I've never needed a service call for it. It get's everything really clean and it never loses suction because the 'bag' gets full...no bag!
I'm going to look up that Dyson cleaner though, I've never heard of it, but if Texas Ranger's wife thinks it's better than a Rainbow...I've GOT to see it! :)
I dunno guys, with this dirt devil I can pull the carpet up off the floor. I made the mistake once of setting it ont he arm of the sofa chair and it ate the upulstry. I told the folks a squirrel got in and took at the chair. :D
My mother has had a Filter Queen for over 25 years. ;)
Well... I bought a new vac last year, had to, the other one was driving me nuts...
I ended up buying a Wertheim.
Went and compared that to the Dyson, and the wertheim has higher power with lower price. That's a winner in my book. The same shop had them both, and they had a test piece of carpet, they threw sand and dust and stuff onto the carpet and ran over it with the Dyson. Then they ran over it with the Wertheim. The Wertheim got out as much on the second pass as the Dyson did on the first. !!! :o
It cost me about $700, which is I think $2.50 in your money :-\ (nah, it's about $500)
It's seriously fantastic. And bagless. And it has hepa filtration, so it doesn't blow that 'vacuum smell' into the air so it doesn't annoy Andrew.
Oh, then, we went and moved into a house with polished floors ::) :o ::) :o ::)

I have ben having the same luck as you except I get just about a year or so. I just replaced the Eureka with a new Oreck I bought off e-bay for $189. So far haven't had it long enough to really judge anything except it seems to do alright.

I read a review just the day before yesterday in Popular Mechanics ??? Can't remember, I was at the tire place. ::)
Anyways, they they compared the Dyson, one of Bis sell's ( space added on purpose ;) ) and another one, and claimed the Dyson won hands down due to some kind of brush drive disconnect, where the Bis sell one worked really, really well, but they burned the brush belt up. ::)
Having said that........I used to work for Bis sell and have built/worked on/owned many.
Don't really know what to say...........
However, if anyone has any of the Bis sell's upright deep cleaners and are having troubles with it, drop me a line before you take it in to be repaired. ;) ;D
Or before you buy.

Now, I'd have to admit I don't listen well whenever the word "vacuum cleaner" is brought up ;D ;D

I installed a Beam central vac system when I built my house in 1980. Still going strong, no signs of wearing out (the house and vaccum, not me :D). We have alergies in our family as well, so I just ran the discharge outside instead of letting it vent into the house. I have to empty the collector drum twice a year -- once a year would be the norm if it weren't for the dog.
It was pretty simple installing it before the wallboard went up. However, the system was designed to be retro-fitted to an older house as well.

And for those of you who are allergic to vacuuming (but not to the dust they stir up), there's always the Roomba http://www.irobotstore.com :) These things actually work -- if your carpet ain't too deep, and if you don't expect it to do stairs. Don't have a clue what the life expectancy is.

The only reason I mentioned Husky is 'cause my youngest Jonsereds saw has a little label on it that says "Jonsereds-Husqvarna". Personally I like a red chainsaw. ;D
We don't have carpet in the house, so it is hard to find a vacumn that gets up the dust. While I prefer to just ignore the dust, some people ::) insist on vacumning every week. We tried one of those little Roombas over the holidays. I thought it was the best invention ever.
DanG, and I thought this thread was going to be about sawdust moving around the mill rather than from the house floor and threads. :D :D :D
I am working of convertin a parking lot vaccum to a mill vaccum. I have yet gotten around to putting all fo the peices together. :-[ :'(

How did "Roomba" work? You said you 'tried' one. Sounds like it didn't work out. ???

We gotta have something quick. I'm going to the janitorial supply place to check out those stripped down commercial vacs. We never use all those attachments, anyway.
Long term, I'm thinking about making a central vac system from a big shop-vac. Just have to get the power head with the brush, and a long hose. Probably do the whole thing for the price of another Walmart Eureka. ;D
The vacuum industry is a heck of a racket! There is no way they should cost what they do. >:(
Anyway, when we built our home in Dover, Minnesota, we installed a built-in centralized Electrolux system I'm convinced that when building a home, that is the way to go. The only thing you have to cart around is the hose. The real plus is because the motor is mounted in the garage, you can install a much more powerful motor. Ours would suck the chrome off a bumper hitch. Right after I retired, I was vacuuming and got to the bathroom where Donna had some panty hose hanging to dry. I got the nozzle near them and they went WHOOSH as they disappeared. Now they had to travel through a lot of pipe so I figured I just clogged up the system.....but I went out to the garage, pulled the bucket off and there they were. ;D I put them in the dirty clothes hamper and never mentioned it to Donna.
Well, we moved to New Richmond, Wisconsin last summer and this house did not have a built-in centralized vacuum system. Donna had a Sears canister but it wasn't doing well at all. I got home from a 2 day woodturning seminar last weekend to find that Donna had bought a purple Dyson vacuum. I didn't even ask how much it cost and I don't want to know, but it sure works well so far. Donna is very pleased with it and showed me all the crud it pulled up. Anyway, if the wife is happy.....I'm happy. :)
DanG, I owned a 16 gallon Shopvac for years before it finally burned up. It was soooo noisey that I should have worn ear protectors when I turned it on. At the time, Home Depot had a sale on Rigid shop vacs, so I bought their 16 gallon one. I'm really pleased with the Rigid. It's a LOT quieter and has twice the power. I'm happy with it. I'm not sure how well it would do for a house vacuum though.
Most any of'em got more suction than the typical household upright, I'd think.
Our daughter-in-law wanted a Roomba for Christmas; so we bought her one. They have ceramic tile floors in their house and a dog that sheds, so this seemed to be the perfect solution.
Before they returned to Germany with the vacumn cleaner, we tested it in the basement of our house. It worked great. I have never checked back with her to see if it is still working for them.
They were in Paris over the weekend where our son ran in a marathon with a couple of buddies. And then called today from Rome, Italy. 8)
I'll email her when they get home to see how the Roomba is working for them.
Wife has had hers for 7 years or so and I had to go look to see what it was :D :D tells you how much I use it :D its an oreck, when she bought it she also got a small oreck that I've used in the truck a time or two and they work pretty good I guess,. Hey she likes it thats all that counts!!

I stand to be corrected on my earlier post. I stated I had never heard of a Dyson. Well, I mentioned this thread to my lovely wife and she said we had talked about a Dyson AND a Rainbow. She said she had dropped a major hint when she told me how old her Kirby was.
Must have been one of my senior moments.
Of course now that I have brought this subject up, she wants to talk about it at length. Will I ever learn?

Guess I am the talk in at least three small towns here lately. The one we live in. The one my wife works in. And the one where she got her hair cut last evening.
Well it started this way. She asks me if I would trim her hair. I said "sure, as soon as this show is over"
I get in the bathroom and she has comb and scissors ready. She has some hair between two fingers looking in the mirror. (you know how they do)
I still don't know why I did it, but I took those scissors and whacked off that hair right above where she was holding it. Shoud have heard her scream. She said she was just lookin tryin to decide whether to take off 1/4 or 1/2 inch not 3 inches. Well, after she quit or I should say slowed down on the explatives, I convinced her it wouldn't look that bad and we should trim the rest to match it.

Oh, and before you start saying I got off topic, I used the vacuum sweeper to clean up the mess.

Well, last evening she went to another town to get her hair "evened up" and I guess everyone in the place had already heard about me messin her hair up.

Dan , you have probably seen a vacuum called the little green pig in the old movie theaters . It's a Tristar Compact . Mine is 23 years old and has never had any problems . Scott
My husband got me a Miele' a few years ago and it is almost shot :'( :'( :'( I would not reccommend this brand to anyone and it was not a cheap vacuum. I would go through an upright about every two years so he decided that I should try a canister vac well that was a mistake. :-[ Yes my hubby makes a mistake once in awhile. :D :D :D :D
Our main vacuum is a Kirby. Expensive to buy, and since then it has dollared us to death. New motor, those dang plastic tubes keep breaking, cheap flimsy hose pulls apart. But when it runs, it does good.
My Mom used an electrolux for 25 years, then gave it to me when I moved out. I used it for another 10 years, then traded it in on the Kirby. Darn thing was indestructible. I loved the metal tubes, and the hose was built to last forever.
When my grandmother died in 2001, I got her Electrolux for an "upstairs" vacuum. Quiet, not as powerful as the Kirby, but more reliable.

My friend is a vet and she has a Kirby, they share it between their Surgery and home, and even toting it back and forth, and all the animal hair it does, she's never had a problem.
She swears by it!
I didn't suggest it for DanG coz it cost double what mine did, and for home use I don't see the added benifit.

I just think this vacumning thing is way over rated. And then to spend a bunch of money on an appliance that pretty much sucks ;D and is a drag to use is just plain silly. I say a $10 dust mop is perfect for the major dust, and for carpets....well if you can't see the dirt, it just isn't there! ;D

Went the Kirby route before. Never again! Sucked up a little bolt with it and shattered the cast aluminum housing. I was glad to see it gone.
We're gonna go for another cheapo from WallyWorld, I guess. Maybe it'll last till we get into the new house, where we'll have a central system.
Well I got me a new best friend today. iRobot vacuum cleaner! 8)
I asked my son how theirs worked and he said they really like theirs, they run it everyday to keep the dog hair under control. I just got mine in today and it id charging. I'll give you all an update as time goes on. I just know you can't wait to hear about how it works! ;D
DanG If you put in the cental vac yourself use regular secdual 40 PVC
It is cheaper heavier and you can get long sweeping elbows and Ts that you can add cleanouts for long runs.
I bought a Vacumaid motor unit and vented it outside .
Also put a vac inlet in every room . I put a vacpan at every entery door and one on the kitchen counter.

Well the little fella has just been working his heart out. He has vacuumed the office today, and has done a fine job. Tomorrow his job is to do the old house, then Saturday he has to do the other house. We will give him Sunday off, then it is back to the office on Monday. This little guy is great. He has an attachment to Norm, follows him all over the office like a puppy. I think we will name him Ralph. ;D
I had a janitorial business for 15 years. We used just about every vacuum made during those years and used them hard. We finally used only Panasonics and were still using them at home up until about 6 months ago. Got a Dyson and have never looked back. In my experience it has no equal at all. 6 months later and we still use it for entertainent just to see how much stuff it will suck up. Unlike most vacs it can't clog up or lose suction. You can find them on the web for about $275.00 if you search. Your wife will be verrry grateful.
