Guys:
I was looking for the weight of tulip poplar per boardfoot when the timbers are green.
The red tool box doesn't show this species.
I did a google search and got 2.58 lbs but it doesn't say if this is dry or green.
Can anyone help me to understand the green weight?

Thanks

Jim, how accurate do you need to be? In general, any weight estimate of green lumber is just that. If the tree grew up across the road down by the creek is vastly different than the tree growing on the ridge behind the house.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

I agree, and since the majority of the weight of poplar is water (% MC can be over 100%) that means even more variability based on growth conditions/time cut down.

are you looking at shipping costs?

Quote from Furby in text message:
QuoteTulip poplar is in the toolbox, its 46 pounds cubic foot green weight. It's under log weight.
That is an approximate of 3.83lbs per bf.

Here Tulip Poplar is referred to as Yellow Poplar and is listed in the Red Toolbox @ 3.2 lbs per bf.

No just green weight of timbers in a frame.

the tool box says yellow poplar is 3.2 lbs per bdft.
But is yellow poplar and tulip poplar the same species?

That is what I always beleived, but that isnt scholastic info, just acquired.  Also called tulip tree,  although there is also an ornamental tulip tree that is definitely not a tulip poplar. ffsmiley

My Wood Technology book has green yellow poplar at 46 lbs/cu ft.  That comes out to 3.83 lbs/bf.  12% MC is 30 lbs/cu ft. or 2.5 lbs/bf.  Yellow poplar and tulip poplar are the same species.

My rafters are Tulip Poplar (as I call it, my forester calls it yellow poplar).  Tell you this first hand....it is way lighter than the red oak post and beams!!

Thanks Ron and Rhodemont for your information.

My engineer said to use 2.25 lbs but I don't believe he is right. As all of you have said 3.83 lbs per bdft green.
I've used that in my design program so that it will automatically calculate the weight of the timbers.
