Counted a dozen freighters in the waters adjacent to Jeff's cabin, seeking safe harbor from the gale force winds. Not a good time to be traversing Lake Superior or crossing the Big Mag for that matter. The shipping season is winding down, but the big boats are still out there working in tough conditions.   Scott B.
I did not fall, there was a GRAVITY SURGE!

From what I read the Sault locks typically close January 15 through March 25, so the freighters will for sure be done hauling then. Quite a few usually tie up in Sturgeon Bay WI for the winter.

I found this site to be a great source of info for locating

We've not left the cabin for 4 days, but need to get home for dr appointments. I know better than to leave here and drive into a lake effect storm. We are hoping for clearing in the morning. I have to blow, all the water lines out to leave, and don't want to do that and get turned around.

@upnut where were ya? You shoulda stopped.

Just skimmed the NWS conditions.  From some of the reports, sounds like equivalent to hurricane conditions.  I don't blame any captain for seeking safe harbor in 20 footers with a gale.

Jeff- I've had to get my U.P. fix remotely lately, the wheels didn't come off completely, but they sure got loose around here...

Anyway, I use this to follow the freighters:https://www.pasty.com/marinetraffic.html

And this to watch the Soo Locks:https://www.sootoday.com/webcams

At one point the Soo got 23 inches of snow in a 24 hour period, I figure you must have felt that too.

Stay safe and warm!

If you like great lakes boats, "Paul Murray" has a You tube channel with over 6000 videos of ships on the great lakes. He takes a 3 minute (or shorter drone) video of every vessel that goes through Port Huron, great views of the ships in action from every side.
