C5D and a cancar 20 winch

Well guys, went to the woods yesterday(saturday) am and mine does have the set screw on the top but no spring below it. So, does anyone know if I can just go get a stiff spring or have to order a specific one? I suppose length and strength are going to be the biggest factors if I can get one from say the hardware store? Not sure if anyone has tried just putting just any old spring that fits well in there, If I remember correctly from replacing bands, It has a tube so to speak down to close to the band so the spring wouldn't be able to slip out between the housing and the band. Any info would be great! Thanks.
