what to plant?

A couple years ago we cut some old white spruce off of a North/north west facing slope on our property and now are thinking of replanting the block. Were leaning to replanting it in red spruce for a change, over the white that was there. Is there any advantage to either, whether the red wouldn't do well on the site or what? Personally i'm pretty sure I remember hearing that white grows quicker then red, any truth to this?
