Interesting Jeff. All the pig roasters around here are wood fired. That's a nice setup you have. I'll be interested to se what kind of drive system you have.
In any event yours is much less labor intensive, obviously borne of experience. When we did a pig roast here, I started the fire around 8pm the night before and sat up until 2am feeding the fire (glad the beer held out) then my 'pig crew' came in at 4am and picked up from there at around 4am and I think they put the pig on at 8am or so. Served up on time at 2pm. But a wood fire is a lot harder to control and 'calm down' so we had some 'char' on that pig skin. Our lab layed under the cutting table and made a pig out of herself taking care of the 'drops'. She could barely walk for about 12-15 hours. :D :D Her coat had quite the sheen for a few days after too from all the fat that dripped on her.

Oh c'mon Jeff, this is the FF! :D I was wondering if you turn it by hand (kid power?) or use a motor. Gas or electric? If electric, is it 220 or 110V, gear reduction motor?, if so, what kind of grease do you use in the gearbox? Do you change the grease yearly? Do you use a lighter grease because of the radiant heat? There are lots of questions here, I mean, the details are important. ;D ;D :D :D It's something that we can debate and discuss until, like, November or so. :)
OTOH I could just wait a week and see for myself. ;D I guess I am just overly anxious to get there and hang out.

Well I doubt that's true, I am pretty sure a good little fire and a pot of coffee could keep us conversing for many hours, but I get your point none the less. I will come armed with many questions and would love to get a look at that funky little instrument you have for one thing. I'd like to see, if I can some of your artwork too, not the wood stuff, the 'other' stuff. You're an interesting family, so I will arrive with open eyes.

My attendance prizes arrived at the campground a few days ago, so at least those are already in the camper and I can't forget to bring them to Michigan.  I will arrive home from Branson on Sunday and leave for Michigan the next morning.  It's the first time I've taken the camper anywhere for just myself to use.

Somehow I missed this last night, put me on the work party list too! I am not much for sitting around without something to keep my hands busy. We should be arriving late Thursday afternoon if we poke along, earlier if all goes well.
Doc, what day are you arriving? I know you mentioned it a while back, but now that we are closer maybe you have a better idea? I was looking forward to seeing your rolling palace, but maybe the rental will be smaller and easier to handle alone? I think you are in #33?
For others, I see there are still lots of open spots in the campground, sadly the other new rental trailer they added is not available that weekend.

I work the next two day and then will be "off" until the 10th.  working out the details, but hope to come earlier in the week.  without the family, it both frees me up and means I have stuff to get done before I leave (prob. makes sense to most of you). we poured half of a concrete pad, and could finish on Saturday or Monday (if I were only 40 again).  I certainly plan/hope to be there by Thursday.  I will bring my Dobro, although I only play on occasion when I have time,  i.e. not played for 5 months.  I will bring the cask as seen

Our camper will not be done with repairs so will likely bring a rental.  It will nice to have an offsite area to hang.  of course it will be good to have a small team to help when needed, and @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1) and @Wildflower (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=9) could come and hang with us if they had a spare moment to relax.  might do some fishing and or sight seeing.  I think the campground was going to try and put us all in the same area.  I know @firefighter ontheside (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=26921) is in the group.  I think @DbltreeBelgians (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=21436) will be there.  who else at HH campground?

Looking forward to meeting up with all of you. See ya all soon.

There are almost too many pig roast threads. ;D I got lost trying to find my way back to this one. :D
Anyway, seems there are a bunch of us at Hidden Hill. I had thought Doc mentioned his campsite number, and I know he is dang close to us, but after searching I can't find it, and I know FFOTS is close to him. We are in Campsite #34, the rental trailer #1. I wonder what site numbers of other 'people' are in so maybe we could do a 'walk about' when we get settled in?
Title: Re: 2021 Pigroast update!
Post by: WV Sawmiller on July 28, 2021, 02:15:42 PM
Tom,

I think you and Doc and FFOTS need to take along a bag of sawdust and sprinkle yourselves a trail out to the main road. That should be a simple, biodegradable technique that would be pretty self explanatory. Have a nice stay.
Title: Re: 2021 Pigroast update!
Post by: Old Greenhorn on July 28, 2021, 02:23:17 PM
Well, Doc had mentioned bringing a warning sign to alert civilians that might stumble into the area about 'Sawyers and Lumberman" or some such thing. I still think that's a good idea, but maybe add an addendum to it about 'bad joke zone', there is a whole long list of things old folks and children should be warned about when the wind up around us.
Title: Re: 2021 Pigroast update!
Post by: firefighter ontheside on July 28, 2021, 04:15:43 PM
I'm in site 36 which should be right behind Tom.
Title: Re: 2021 Pigroast update!
Post by: Old Greenhorn on July 28, 2021, 04:47:42 PM
Your site is diagonally behind me but I think Doc got 33 which gives us a power triangle of 3 spots. :D
It appears that all the sites in our 'cell block' are taken so it will be interesting to see if any others from our crew are in that bunch.
 I'd better bring a bigger cooler. ;D
Title: Re: 2021 Pigroast update!
Post by: doc henderson on July 28, 2021, 05:02:24 PM
I confirmed site 33.  Joe also confirmed others in our area affiliated with the pig roast (campground prob. on high alert and with additional security :)) and he mentioned some site numbers, but I will leave that for others to divulge at their own discretion.  I spoke with Joe and he has 3 sites still open.  I had reserved the 4th through the 10th.  I work on the 10th and so moved it from the 3rd to the 9th.  45 bucks a night.

Yeah, I got a secret coded message from one of our crew just seconds after I made that last post. I am up to speed (I think) on possible adjustments in execution. It will be great to hang with everyone now matter how it shakes out. I spent the afternoon sweating it out cleaning the truck cab  and toolbox(it was due) because there is nothing worse than siting there and looking at dust and wood chips everywhere for mile after mile. I'll give it a good wash when we get closer.

I suppose one of us could go into full blown recon mode and gather some intel on who this guy is, but I suspect he is either part of the family or seasonal help. If you want a sit rep I can get you something after I arrive. Or maybe Bill, being the point man can get that for you. ;D :D

Recon complete MM. Doc gave me the lead and I found this on the website:
"Hidden Hill Campground was founded in 1969 by Harrison resident, Bob McRay. Bob's granddaughter named the campground "Hidden Hill Campground" because there was a hill between M-61 and the main camping area. There have been four (4) previous owners before the Lehman's. Joe & Shari Lehman purchased the campground on May 12, 2021 and have re-named it to include "Family." "

So I guess I can leave my camo paint at home, mystery solved.

Jeff and Wildflower aren't the only ones in full prep mode. I (we) haven't done any distance driving in decades so the other day I started cleaning out/up the truck by doing a full and careful vacuuming, then wiping down all the dust and dirt off the interior surface, also swept out the bed and cleaned out the toolbox (sort of). I have never been much of a detailer since I was in my 20's, but it needs it. All the dusty dirt roan muddy stuff adds up. Today we have the boys, so I thought just washing the floor mats was something I could do while also refereeing 'disagreements'. As soon as I started, the youngest walks over "what cha doin'?" , "washing matts", "can I help?", "sure!". ;D

Next thing you know, the second one comes over, "Watcha Doin?"  ;D....... Next thing you know......

So I just took photos like a dutiful grandpa. As long as they were on a roll, we scrubbed out the truck bed, cleaned all the glass, and put rain-x on the windshield (haven't done that in decades). I couldn't get the 3rd one to come out of the house, he hates bugs.
Yesterday when it was raining I worked on carefully putting my wardrobe ensemble together. :D :D (i.e. throwing stuff in a suitcase, and "Honey, where are my jeans without the hole in the crotch?")
So we are getting ready for the drive starting with (hopefully) an early start on Wednesday.

Thanks Jeff, That did it! Ironically after looking at several thousand of your photos (really, no kidding) The one thing I was missing was ( I think) the most recent. Got them all now.
Can't wait, really, I can't wait. This is a long time coming for us. I had hoped to make it last year as part of my 'newly retired' status gift to me, but that surely didn't go as any of us planned. ;D I am glad we can sort of 'fix that' now, but am very much bummed about the border still being closed as I wanted to hook up with some of our buddies in slightly colder climes.

I will not be cleaning my truck.  I will drive it home on Sunday and not even disconnect the camper.  Unload all the stuff that I don't need, like kids and wife and all their stuff.  I will likely have to do a little laundry and then throw some more clothes in the camper and head north on Monday.  I'm happy the weather looks like I'll be able to wear some long pants.  Should take me about 10 hours, but with stops maybe 10.5.

Today is another shopping day and Tammy and I have a Coleman Veterans Memorial board meeting tonight. We go right from the pigroast into full tilt concert prep. I highly recommend on your way to the roast, slide off at the coleman exit on us 10, on the way for many, and visit the memorial. Its only about 25 minutes from here. That memorial has soul. You need to feel it.

Simple question. What 3 objects has the pigroaster been painted up to look like over the years. The clues are in the paint, or lack there of and forum searches, or your buddies pms.

Looks like everything survived the trials of shipping!
The large piece is one I have been working on two and a half years.  Between designing the background or the buildings, road or no road, and learning how to paint glazes so they would look somewhat normal it has been a challenging work.  I made it so a Woodmiser lt40 sawmill model fits in the base flat part.  I hated the idea of giving up mine so hopefully Woodmiser will provide one, if not my the receiver not have one, drop me a line.

If I had Jeff's talents at painting, my work would be so blessed.  Jeff, if ever you get inspired, I would love to buy a painting from you.

I have been a Forestry Forum member for 13 years and have attended two Pig Roasts.  The community that you all represent mean a great deal to me and by offering my pottery I feel I have something to contribute.  The gallery where I sell my work misses out while I cherry-pick the most desirable pieces to send and the hours I devote are small in relation to the time and warmth I receive from you.

Have fun and take pictures.

We may very well not make it.  We had a major lightning 🌩 strike.   Blew outside flood lights off the side of the house, phone entrance,  well control box is blown up in the basement, several outlets and switches in the house are blackened, blew the main breaker in the  panel and sub panel and the meter may very well be fried.  Cooked the in ground pet fence box too. We won't know the full extent of the damage until day break.  There are craters in the yard where it hit a shepherd's hook bird feeder hanger, and blew a chunk out of one of the concrete deck pillars.  Knocked knick knacks off shelves. Crazy.  Lucky the house didn't burn down.  We're not sure if the power company will energize the house or will require an inspection which is probably a good idea.  Going to be a busy day.

Had a house just down the road get struck last week. Same thing, hit their fence in their yard and it went down into the ground and went to the houses foundation, you could see where it burned a path in the grass!

Boy howdy we had such a great time we had! The day was just super and the folks were great. Lots of great conversations. Speaking of Howdy, his door prize contributions were much coveted by guy and gal alike, as were all the others, but Howdy's had that little sumptin' sumptin' Great day all around.

 @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1)
Thank you Jeff, Tammy and the rest of the crew and all the members and sponsors that contributed to what I feel was a great pig roast. We met a lot of new faces this year and also got to see some people that we met the last time we came up back in 2018.

@firefighter ontheside (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=26921)   Bill, glad you made it home and yeah I got your message.

Found this on my bumper but not until I was unhooking the trailer at the campgrounds in Wolverine Michigan.

 @doc henderson (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041)
Brian and Georgia it was a pleasure meeting you both and we hope your trip back to Hutchison is/was safe safe and uneventful.

@Old Greenhorn (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=42103)  Tom and Pat, hold the fort at Hidden Hills and safe travels back to New York. Thank you for everything and it was a pleasure meeting you both.

@Magicman (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=10011)  Lynn & Pat, it was great to see you both again. Oh and I promise not to touch your knife ever again.  :D

@terrifictimbersllc (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=11495)  Wow Dennis you saved the day with that adult beverage. I was pretty hot and thirsty after having that tire ordeal at the Birch Run exit. Thanks again buddy. You da man.

I'm sure I missed plenty more but to everyone at the 2021 pig roast and behind the scenes a big thank you from Jill and me and we're looking forward to the next go round.

Seeing y'all brings back wonderful memories of friendship and good times.  Thanks for the pictures.

My plans for attending were changed as I came down with COVID and can only attend from my hospital room. It was quite a surprise as I seldom have close contact with others but a single visit to my sister in Seattle last week proved to be the entire family's down falling.

Sorry to have missed such an colorful and talented group of folks.  I hope everyone had a good time.

I'll say!!!  I saw him in Georgia two years ago. Then a couple days ago I'm walking across Jeff's lawn and I hear someone saying hello Dennis, and I turned and see there is Furby sitting on a bench. In Michigan.
