Spalted Maple Boards Value
« on: July 05, 2011, 10:36:34 PM »
Good evening,

I have recently sawed some spalted maple which can be viewed in my photo gallery under the same name.  It is the first time I sawed maple like this and think it turned out decent.  I would appreciate any input/comments to the boards and a realistic value.  I ended up with about 500 bf., mostly 4/4, but some 6/4, 8/4 and one really nice 10/4 slab heavily figured.

Thanks

The market depends on your marketing approach.  I stopped calling it rotten and switched to spalted when I realized people paid more for it than good lumber.  Small amounts as 500 bf can be sold to woodworking chains as Woodcraft or Rockler stores but they want it kiln dried.  Call the nearest store and ask them for ideas.

I wholesaled some to my friend for $2.50 bd ft. Was real nice stuff. Plenty of spalting with no knots and was still very structurally sound. Not kiln dried.  He brought it back to his shop that day and a customer came in and bought the all the boards for $5.00 a board ft kiln dry.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I tried calling the stores you mentioned, emailed them a couple of pics.  Perhaps something will come of it.  Again, I appreciate the assist.

I sell it for from $1.50 to 2.50  as logs that I cut
customer pre buys the logs from my homemade spalted collection based on scale stick
and I cut

I have received as much as $7 per for air dried planed and edged wood and $9 for vmatch air dried planed

these are word of mouth sales of from 200 to 1500 bd ft

most of the better but not perfect maple I get I leave on the ground to spalt
the perfect I sell as logs to keep a cash flow  I also keep the perfect that I think have nails cause at $2.50 off the mill I make way better bucks and don't mind eating a blade or two

Some of it looks pretty good. It is likely some of the color variation I see that some will become unusable and fracture along the line from good wood (dries slow) and semi punky wood (dries fast). Actual spalt is good to great, color variation (another plus) is good. I would sell green for the price specfied earlier $2.50 and let them deal with the degrade from drying. It is a complate crap shoot with spalt, when to cut, what is good, and what will be ruined after drying.
