Any tips building/designing a 28x28 Board and Batten garage Gambrel Style roof?

Hi, I am getting ready to build a 28 x 28 Garage, it'll have board and Batten siding a Gambrel Style tin roof, I am going to have a 6 inch concrete floor with two foot high knee walls, the garage will have 10 Ft ceilings on the first floor and 8 ft on second floor.

I plan for now to have either one slider or two sliding barn type doors in the front and a regular door on the side toward the front of the building.

I plan to tyvec the outside of the building and then put up the board and batten, trusses will prob be 2ft oc.

The garage will be build into a bank a bit and that is the reason for the knee walls. There not be a beam in the center so the front will be one big opening, any idea how big I should make that?

I plan to have a Hay door up top with the over hang and pulley system like the old barns.

The very first thing I would do is draw it up in SketchUp or a similar program.  SketchUp is free, and a huge time/money saver but it does require a bit of effort to learn.

For your beam once you have plans, run it by an engineer.  That's a real easy thing to do and shouldn't cost much.  At the same time you might ask about footing size for your knee wall.

The only other thing I noticed was you mentioned Tyvek.  There is a big difference between the store branded building papers and real Tyvek.  First is money and second is quality...you get what you pay for.  Tyvek will hold up better if you are slow getting up the siding.

Sounds like an interesting build...take plenty of pictures for us to watch your progress.

I am having a Engineer draw up plans, the Town requires it for Concrete work and i figured I would have him draw up the building also. I am not quite sure what to do about the door in the front and how to set it up. I hope to start it this fall.

I think the way you talk you are going to have the eves side away from the over head doors,which is good. Good to have 2 foot high knee walls,less chance of rot and water splashing on the wood. I made a horse run in with 10 inch boards and 4 inch batten. Looks real good. I saw it on a building on the way to work and I stopped to see what size he used.

Yes the doors will be away from the eaves so the snow will fall to the sides.  Can you post pics of yours?

I will try to tommorrow. Have alot going on,as always. I probaly planted about 200 feet of string beans about a month ago. Guess what I've been doing the last few days? I hate picking beans.

One of the best tips that I have found for a Gambrill roof is to know how many day in a leap year. It you use this tib bit yuo can calculate the length of the roof.
.366 x the width needed with each of the four pieces are cut at a 15 and 30 degree will give you your roof having a 60 degree start and a 30 end.

JOE.G, We just finished building a 30x20 Timber frame garage for a close friend this spring. Poplar board and batten. We chose to excavate 1' past the footers and fill with stone all the way around the structure to keep the water away from the slab and the board and batten.

thecfarm, what's the significance of the star on the side of your barn?  We traveled through the midwest this summer and saw that on lots of barns and houses.  We asked several people but no one seemed to know what it was about.

The stars mean nothing that I am aware of. We have a bigger one on the garage. I think they look good.
And by the way.I did cheat on some of the boards. Some are only 9 or 9½ inches wide. You can only tell that from the inside.

Thanks Guys they look nice, I have barn stars also. I think the standard size for Batons around here are 2 Inch. The guy who owns the saw mill hooks me up so I don't want to get picky.

I cleared the spot yesterday, Had to take down about 10 Trees, I am hoping the size I have chose is big Enough.

That sounds like a great project.  I engineer and build my own stuff so I have a couple thoughts. When going into a slope make sure to place a perforrated drain pvc pipe just below the slab finished edge. Cover with weed cloth to keep the dirt out and cover with rock. Run around slab and aim down slope. You may even want to paint a tar coat where the block meets the slab. Water proofs the joint. I friend asked for advice and then did not heed it and has water seepage all the time.

If cutting your own lumber random width boards covered with all the random width sides board from a squared up cant looks nice and uses all available material. No waste.

On ten foot side walls a couple rows of fire blocking makes a secure nailing surface.

The only problem I have with a Gambrel roof is the width of flashing where the first break from the ridge will be for the tin. And I use a quality caulking on this joint also.

This is just a few thoughts as now is the time to think of every possible OH Thit, why did I do that?

I am unsure how many windows to put in and what type of heat to use I am thinking radiant but i  don't know. If I do radiant I can get tube in concrete now and then next year finsh off the heat.

  I built a garage like that one time.  You build the first floor walls and the floor system on top of them, then sheet the floor. Your gambrel roof will be built with a 24/12, with a wall at 4' in from the lower wall, and the top of your rafter will catch on that wall, on 2 sides, parallel.  Then you measure outside from one wall to outside of the other, and build a 5/12 roof across those, with ceiling joists of course, 20' long in this case. Throw a plank longways across your ceiling joists, so you can walk on the ceiling, and build your upper roof.  When I built one, I put a 12 or 16" over hang on the ends, and think a 24" on the bottom.  Cut your tails so they measure 22 1/2" out from the building, and plumb your cuts, then cut the bottom off so a 2x6 fits and nail the 2x6 on straight(level). you can cut notches  in your rafters so you can support your overhang rafters with a flat 2x4 or 2x6 notched in on top.  After you have everything straight, you can sheet the roof, tarpaper and roof.

  Forgot to say anything about your upper floor endwalls, you have to build them after you get the 24/12 rafters up, and you can build a regular 8' endwall between the parallel walls before you start on the roof. Is this confusing? Then fill in above the 8' wall on up to the 5/12 roof.

I am using pre made trusses, giving me a 28 x 16 x 8 room upstairs.
