I have no idea. It has medullary rays, but I doubt its oak.

This came from a farmer friend of mine.  I didn't get to see any leaves.  I think he cut it down before it leafed out.  He told me he thought it was locust.  I think if it was honey locust it would have had thorns on the trunk.  Definitely not the bark of black locust.  I didn't see the rays until I blew up the picture.  Its really hard and heavy.

Well, I reached out to Danny and he said it has to be in the white oak group, most likely Burr Oak.

Honeylocust

There are hybrids that do not produce the thorns on the trunk.

A good confirmation check would be to put a UV light on it.  Sapwood will turn blue, Heartwood yellow.

According to wood database, honey locust has open pores.  The pores in this wood are definitely clogged with tyloses.  Other than that it looks identical to the end grain pic of honey locust on wood database.  Black locust has closed pores, but the bark is completely wrong for black locust.  Kentucky coffee tree is similar too, but again, open pores.  Could it be a hybrid?  I don't know.

I'd go with Danny.  Bark looks a lot like the pin oak around here, but I don't have burr oak and I sure wouldn't bet against an expert. Bark is a bit like honey locust, but the end grain sure isn't.  Open it up and let's see what's inside!

I'm sure Danny is right.  The log is sitting on the mill, but I won't be able to cut into it til next week.  I have to work a 72 hour shift starting tomorrow morn.

@btulloh  I milled it today.  I'd have to say Danny was in fact right.  It smells like oak.  Assuming it is Burr Oak, I want to mill more, because it is especially pretty.

After seeing the lumber pics, I agree, Barbender.

I agree with thornless honeylocust.

Ok, we will settle on thornless honeylocust.  I did make one 6x6 out of the smaller log, so that may come in handy for personal use or I will sell it.  Thanks.

I didn't think it was oak after seeing the end grain. But didn't know what it was at that point. Not familiar with a lot of your wood down there, never see it up here. ;) Yet, I see radiata pine for doors and stair treads. Nice, no knots, but awfully soft for stairs. :/  I actually bought one tread and converted it into a corner shelf for the clock. :D :D
