Hey guys.  I need a new guide bar and set of chains for a Stihl 039.  I'm no professional tree service but enjoy cutting my own firewood and managing my property.  I'd like a 20" bar but don't know what pitch or gauge I need.   I have been researching Stihl's website and trying to find some recommendations and/or part numbers but can't come up with anything.  Also, with all the choices on chains, it's hard to figure out where to start.

Any help would be appreciated to get me pointed in the right direction for a new bar and a couple chains.

Thanks.

Get a Stihl ES bar, .50 gauge 3/8 pitch and a 72 DL flat top Stihl chain and you will be all set

X2 CCC4, a bit more detail.

Current Stihl catalog page 153 has part numbers should you like to think about them. http://www.stihlusa.com/WebContent/CMSFileLibrary/downloads/STIHL-Saw-Chain-Selection-Identification.pdf

For this amount  of investment I would take the Stihl route, just go to your Stihl dealer,  get the Stihl 20" ES bar ***edited since posting 3003 000 8822 if you can*** and 72 drive length loops of 33RS3 (square corner round filed, also called "chisel", for clean wood), or 33RM3 ("semi chisel", or "micro" meaning the corner isn't square but has a slight rounding, doesn't dull so fast with dirtier wood or if you have trouble avoiding cutting into the ground).  Not sure why the 33RM3 chain isn't in the catalog list but it is available at my nearby hardware store which sells Stihl.
These are 050 gauge, 3/8 pitch.

These are not "safety" chains meaning the depth gauges are simple without a bunch of extra metal to file down to maintain the chain but don't benefit from reduced kickback potential.

Also have them look up to make sure the bar fits your 039 if it is not in stock.

3003 mount bar, unless set up very strange before should have standards 3/8" chain. As stated, 72 drive links for a 20" bar. Online places also sell aftermarket bars and you can usually call them with your saw and they'll tell you what you need.

Thanks guys.  Thanks for the parts link!  3003 008 3921 is not listed for a 20" ES bar but 3003 008 8921 is for a standard bar (R) without removable tip.  In fact no 20" (RS) bar is listed on that parts page.  I guess I have to do some more digging and should give Stihl a call.

I went and looked at the 20" bars (3/8, 050) for my MS460s, the number is 3003 000 8822, it is a Stihl Rollomatic ES, the sprocket nose is replaceable not laminated.  Not on the catalog provided above but I believe this is the bar you want.   I bought the first one about 10 yrs ago and the last one about 2-1/2 yrs ago they have the same bar.

I gave a local Stihl dealer a call and didn't get much help there.  Thanks for the additional info TTLLC, 3003 000 8822 it is.  By chance would this be the same bar for a MS290 Farm Boss?  I don't know if the gauge and pitch would be the same or not.

Depends, some 290's came with a 3/8 pitch some came with a .325 drive sprocket.
Not sure which came first, but I have chickens and eggs.

MS290 came with a 3/8" pitch and 050 gauge 16" bar so the 20" 3003 000 8822 bar should fit since it's the same pitch and gauge, correct?
