Hey, i was looking at a skidder the other day, a 96 525 Cat, with a 4 cylinder engine, anyone know anything about these older 525 with a 4 cylinder, the rear end wouldn't lock in, the guy says it was the clutch pack in the rear end needs to be replaced, anyone know a cost for this?

anything to do with rear ends and the diff. lock be careful lot of money invested in labor costs and usually parts arent that cheap.  we know a guy from londonderry who runs a 525 and likes it but also another machine that is hard on the fuel.  but you will have that with any grapple. we run a 548 grapple and on a 9 hour day only burn about 10 to 15 gallons.  might be something you want someone to come and look at with you.

A few guys around here run them and like them but they are pretty thirsty. We run a JD 548 and like it a lot.

A JD will be better on fuel and quicker on the ground...however, the guys with the 548, not comparable to the 525...its more in class with the 648, though that 4 cyl old version might run the same horses as a 548
