Are you saying that they are both Sicilian donkeys, just full sized and minatures?

According to legend these are the donkeys that either Mary rode into Bethlehem or Christ rode somewhere  ??? and they've been marked with a cross ever since.  There's a Biblical explanation for the cross marking on their back :)  My neighbor has some but I think he calls his Jacobean donkeys  ???  They look identical to these  :)  They're cool little fellas  :) ;D :) and they eat hay  ;) ;D

Lynn, a miniature measures 36 inches or less at the withers. The miniature can only carry 80 to 100 pounds and can pull a small cart. For you purposes, you would have to have a full sized donkey.

My daughters brought a friend out to see him yesterday while I was out getting the pictures. The second he saw them come around the corner, he made a bee line for them. When one daughter would finish petting him, he would nuzzle up to the other. This went on the whole time they were out there.  :)

I have a full size donkey named Bob that looks like your's only about 700+ pounds. Bob has been here for 16 of his 17 years and no problem with foundering even though he is never restricted. We have 2 adjoining farms and rent out the house on the one near Bobs pasture. I once told some new tenants to make sure they kept their German Shepard dog out of the pasture and they started to assure me the dog wouldn't hurt the donkey, they looked very surprized when I said I wasn't worried about the donkey because he would stomp the dog to death in a few moments if given a chance. They kept their dog tied!

It's a survival instinct inbred into donkeys .They're just like a moose in they don't differenciate between a dog and  a wolf . If it has teeth ,a tail that wags and acts like a wolf it must be a wolf in their minds eye .

The mustangs they pull off the western ranges have the same trait .

OK donkey fans help me out here. My wife "rescued" a standard sized Jenny the day before Christmas. For the first week and a half, she was sweet as could be, we could handle her all we wanted, go in her stall with her, no problems. Since then, she has done her best to kick every member of the family, the vet, the farrier, and anything else she gets close to. I am getting to the end of my rope here, she is going to have to straighten up or move on in the next couple of weeks.

I have to say, she does make a great guard animal. Nobody comes down our driveway now without a very vocal announcement from Holly the Christmas donkey.

I'd say the donkey has found out how it can be the "boss" and some "training" is needed.
Maybe some "horse whisperer" reading is in order.

When we got out first Donkey he tried to push us around, but you have to push back and show them that you are in charge. If you pull on their whiskers when they do something bad they will slowly learn what not to do IME.....

People say they are dumb or stubborn, but in reality they are very smart and are usually trying to outsmart us.....

I come from the old school of horse training, one that kicks gets a 2x4 right between the ears. Two kicks gets two whacks and so on. Didn't take mine long to decide I had an unlimited supply of 2x4s.

When I was around 8 years old I saw my Uncle coming through the fence to the field behind our place, carrying his son Andy who was about 3 then and his other son Rick walked along side.
It looked like Andy had bright ribbon in his blonde hair til we got closer and saw he was limp and covered with blood on his face and arms.
My Uncle was loading his truck with manure from the barn and Adeline, the Donkey took a dislike to the boys and knocked them both down and stomped Andy, while Rick was able to roll out of the way.My Uncle had to beat and stab Adeline with the fork to get in and grab Andy.

The donkey must learn who is the boss and who is not. Right now, she is the boss at your house, and will continue to be until you convince her otherwise....    She wants to hurt you, hurt her back more until she understands the lesson.

If she decides to bite, I learned from a horse lady, that a sharp uppercut to her chin (she won't be able to see it coming) will sop the biting. This tactic won't make her head shy, because if done correctly she will not see your fist coming up under her chin. She will just know that every time she takes a bite, she gets whacked and it hurts.

Tough love!  ;)
