i built these for one of the guys at the FD.  I've built a lot of these built ins for either side of a fireplace.  These took me longer than they should have.  I started getting cool weather that was not conducive to spraying the tinted lacquer that I use.  Still, they were very happy with them.

Thanks guys.  I build all of my painted stuff with MDO plywood for the cases and yellow poplar for the face frames and other trim parts.

Doc, had the same thought.  A friend here built a similar set up, gas fireplace.  Had to limit time of burn due to heat build up on the side of cabinets.  He noticed it when the paint began to darken.

I was giving him a hard time all in fun.  but I guess a test fire with non contact thermometer would not hurt.

Lol.  I'm sure this is within acceptable parameters, but it is a firefighters house.

These look very nice! What tinted lacquer do you use? I just sprayed Target Coatings em6500 for the first time last night. It is hands down the best water based finish I have ever sprayed, but I still prefer an oil based lacquer.

I am quite certain of that as well, very nice!

It is EM6500.  I've been using it for several years.  It is the best "paint" I've sprayed out of my HVLP.  Much easier to use and clean up than anything oil based.  I struggled a bit with this because I spray in my garage.  The cool, damp weather gave me problems.

They are plenty proud of the stuff, but it sprays very nice for water based stuff. The fact that I can sand it down with 320 within a half hour and apply a second coat makes it worth every penny. It does make a mess when compared to solvent based lacquer that is dust by the time it hits the ground but much better than other water based stuff. I just hung up some plastic.

I want to get away from painting any projects, but if I have to keep doing it, at least I can use the em6500.
