About 10 years ago I moved to Marion Louisiana, and begin building a house. I designed a woodworking shop about 20' x 40' which ended up not being finished. After the area was framed up, it ended up being used as storage. I finally got around a couple of months ago to finish off the framed up work area. My nephew helped me move the HEAVY machinery into the area, after being in storage all these years. It's a happy day!

After organizing the tools where they need to be, The first project will be reproduction of two Hammond organ cabinets. I've been a musician all my life, and owned a Hammond B3 since the age of 15. It's HEAVY, and the guys do NOT want to lift the thing when we play. I've got the bright idea of making the thing lighter by having the base legs collapse into a flight case, and the main body lift into a separate one. The main body will also have a digital preamp, which replaces the heavier tube preamp. Also the case will be build out of cypress, which will be lighter than the hardwood plywood on the originals. Thanks for all the nice words! BTW, I have a through wall heat pump from Home Depot in the wall to the right in the middle of the room. The room is totally insulated. I've already found that it takes about 10 minutes for it to cool down OR heat up to happy, happy, happy! I'll update when I have a project done. 8)

This is the first time I've used my lathe in probably 15 years. It still works! I'll post some more pictures as I go along. I'm trying to build a cabinet which can be more portable than the original made by Hammond, and yet be as close in appearance as the original Hammond B3 organ when set up.

Jon: Yes, the walls are 1x8 tongue and groove pine which I bought locally. My time is limited, and so I could not mill the lumber for the walls. I used 3/8" plywood in the ceiling and the floor. The floor had an existing 3/4" subfloor, and so I put down felt before applying the plywood on top so there would be a vapor barrier. I insulated the walls and ceiling before applying the plywood and T&G.

I have an original Hammond organ that I'm measuring in order to reproduce this cabinet. I think I'm within about 1/16" of the original! 8)

That looks like a very nice project shaping up.....do you have "before" pics of your B3?.....I'm assuming you also lug around a Leslie or two to go with the B3?....no wonder the boys complain!!...LOL....any bass pedals?..what do you play....blues....jazz....rock?...all of the above?....I used to own a Hammond X5 which is 44/44 portable unit....solid state however, without the warmth and percussion of the B3 (tonewheels) (and the weight)..... and Leslie 147.....still heavy though....can't imagine carrying the B3 beast in and out of gigs.....please keep the pics 'a comin'!!...your shop looks great!!..I'm a woodworker also, in the process of building a 20 X 44 shop...wasn't sure if that would be big enough but now that I see yours.....it looks pretty roomy!!....keep it up and thanks for posting!!....twister
Thanks twister. Yes, this is a fantastic size shop for a lone woodworker! I've been in woodwork heaven the last few weeks.
The idea of this project is to make a reproduction B3 cabinet that will be in TWO flight cases. The lower frame will disassemble and be put in a low case. The main body will be in another case. The whole idea is to have a B3 lookalike that someone would have a tough time telling from a real one which will be easy to move by myself, or with help from one friend.
I play classic rock, and have never used the bass pedals. You can't use pedals when you have a bass player...it would sound terrible, and doesn't work. By not having the metal pedal bar on the bottoms, I've cut a significant weight...that thing is heavy.
I'm going to use a digital preamp unit by Trek which replaces the tube preamp and also saves weight. The tone wheel generator is the magic of the Hammond, and of course, it remains along with the two manuals. The new unit also adds percussion and reverb since I'm using an older model Hammond CV which did not have percussion. It's a challenging project for me, but I'm in no rush, and have a gang of help in a Facebook forum I'm a member of. I'm using solid cypress instead of solid core plywood which was used in the original. It probably less than HALF the weight of the original.
I've owned a B3 for forty plus years, and I'm using that to measure in order to reproduce the case.
I see that your using galvanized pipe on some pf your
pipe clamps. Change over to black pipe and you will
like your clamps so much more. The galvanize will
let the end slip real easy.

The Hammond B3 uses a separate speaker cabinet, and of course, the Leslie is the preferred choice. I've used a 122 all my life, and plan on using it with this one too.
Christmas is over, and today I got back in the shop and did a few things.
First, I finally received my large diameter router bit in from China to rout the main cabinet sides.

I use both galvanized and black pipe whatever I can find as scrap.
free is good even if it sometimes slips.
Thanks Pete. I've had those clamps for forty years and they still work fine. I've built houses and furniture with them. I still have a bunch, but as they say, you can never have enough clamps!
Looking good Planman. But if moving is the problem, Schaaf supply carries an organ dolly that mounts semi permanently to the bottom of the organ. only raises the keyboard up about 2" but allows you to go anywhere with it. with a 6' ramp, it would load easily into a small cargo trailer. I used to play with a guy who insisted on gigging with a Steinway model "I" (Studio upright). Small, but much heavier than the Hammond. He had a set of Trucks underneath the piano and did all his own moving. Never had a problem getting in and out of places. It just seems to me to be more work breaking it down, packing it, moving it, unpacking it and setting it back up than it would be to just roll it.
Nice job btw, on that shoulder. Not sure how thick your veneer was, but if you need to make more radius curves, a small steam iron is your friend, apply steam to the outside of your curve and/or dry heat to the inside and you can easily make any radius you need. also, when using the cut out as a clamping block, use two or three thicknesses of rubber tubing in between the block and the veneer to ensure 100% contact. I use a section or two of bicycle tubing. Years ago, piano manufacturers used keybed felt. Either seem to work just fine, but the bicycle tubing I think, is less prone to slipping.

That is a good tip! Bicycle tube...never thought about that! Thanks. As far as mobility, the whole project is about breaking the organ into two parts in order for me to move it easily. It may not work, and if not, I'll just use the original casters that I have for my original B3.
I'm going round and round right now on a way to lift the thing with a scissor table lift. I found one at harbor freight for about $170, but getting it out of the way after I lift it up and install the legs, and let it back down would take modifying the lift, and I don't do metal! Maybe Pineywoods can help me engineer something.😀

Today I drilled the holes for the legs and mounted the cabinet. I'm a happy fellow! It was STABLE, and that's even without the top glued on and the back, which will also prevent racking side to side. I think I'm good on the portable idea!

I thought I might play in the shop today and attempt to reproduce the music base holder with the grooves. Boys and girls, do NOT try to make one of these at home. It was tough, but I'm fairly happy with the result so far. I had to custom file one of my router bits to get the grooves. It was very time consuming. Those guys probably had a custom molding bit they used to make the part. It's made in pieces and nailed together with finish nails. I took the CV stand apart to see how it was made. Lots of angles to make without the factory bits! This is before I trim the ends to length and chisel out for the hinges and felt tips.

I had to take a few days off from the project. My sinuses had gotten the best of me, and so after three weeks, I broke down and went to the doctor. I got two shots and a round of antibiotics. I was feeling better the next morning until....I bent over to turn the water off the tub and bent just right to feel the dreaded ripple in my back. It's done it about every five years or so, and so I'm out for count for a few days of bed rest. I hope to get back to it in a few days.

Sinuses weren't because of dust in the shop? I installed a shop air cleaner at the school shop, made a world of difference. Used to have to clean my glasses at the end of each class, now not even at the end of the day. Sound investment in my book. Love the shop, beautiful work on the case. Farmerjw...I don't think it is shop dust...it's this crazy weather in north Louisiana. Been below freezing the last few days, and this week it will be in the eighties. And with the humidity, it wreaks havoc on the sinuses. Everyone has it practically!
Whew! Man, my sinuses were messed up! I'm starting to feel almost normal again, and got back into the shop yesterday and made a little progress on the organ cabinet. First I made a spacer which goes underneath the rear top piece. It lifts that piece to match the top front piece which rests on felt tips. Anyway, here's a picture of one of the two glued onto the top of the end:

Thanks for the kind words. Next I plan on using my new harbor freight table lift to slip under the main body and lift it up, slip the legs off, and then flip it upside down in order to install the rounded lower body trim piece. That ain't gonna be no fun.

Ok, so here's the idea I've had all along implemented. Using my table lift, I first placed it under the organ. The middle bottom stretcher has been lifted out:

Sorry it's been so long since the last update on the project. My father in law passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was a true hero, having served in Korea as well as Vietnam. He received the Purple Heart, and had a military salute at the service. It was very moving...a real tear jerker for my wife and me. He jumped off a gun boat and saved a number of his comrades when the boat in front was hit in nam. He was severely injured in Korea when a thousand pound weight fell on him while they were loading a ship. And then he was shot in the chest in Vietnam. He was in the hospital for months in both instances, but recovered nicely over time. I spoke to him a couple of days before he died, and he admonished me to get my transmission fluid changed. I did it of course, and was proud of myself and ready to tell him. I think He knows. We'll miss him.
Anyway, here's the final pictures of the project. The next steps will be to build flight cases for the organ, apply the stain and lacquer finish, and then install the innards from the old CV Hammond organ.

Very sorry to hear about your father in law, our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Your craftsmanship is amazing to me, I truly admire the woodworking skills shown on this board because I have none, I need a hammer, torch, and a welder so to speak. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Ok...I'll post a few of the flight cases after I build them, and then one after the cabinet is lacquered. And I'll post one of the finished organ. It will be a while though. House plans are booming (my real job) which is a great thing!
My wife and I found a used commercial sewing machine on eBay. We got it in yesterday, and she and I made a cover for the main body (After a minor problem was repaired by Pineywoods. ;D) The cover is necessary to protect the finish as the flight case lid is lowered onto the thing. Anyway, I got a photo of her sewing the cover together. We used a packing blanket I had laying around. After some careful cutting and fitting, it turned out great! I had some time this week to get back on the flight case. I'll admit it has been a tough build...almost as hard as the organ! Working and cutting metal is not fun to me. Anyway, here's a couple of pictures of the case, which is almost complete. I had to change the design a bit, and used latches instead of hinges which separate for the end pieces that remove. I'm waiting on them to come in the mail. I sat the casters on their base and took a picture. The case of course is upside down. I think it looks good. It has to sit off the ground a bit in order for the lift to go underneath. That's the reason for the high caster supports. Also, in one picture, you can see the little 1" rubber bottom pieces I put on one end. This will give me a cushion when I stand it on end for dollying.

I guess it will be come clear when we see it in the case, but... What is the purpose of the removable ends? To lift it out of the case? And will there be another case for the legs that fold up?
After the case is jacked up, the ends are removed from the case. This allows me to slip the legs into the holes in the bottom of the body. The case is then unlatched, and the bottom half (the part with the casters on on it) is lowered with the jack and set aside. The top of the flight case is removed, and the organ is set up. Oh, and yes, there will be another case built for the legs and the crosspiece which will have the volume pedal attached. My plan at the moment is to also house a portable keyboard in the same case along with cords, in order to have all my stuff in only two cases.

Here's my improvised paint booth for Saturday...a 45 dollar eBay find! I laid a tarp down and set it up over it. This will keep the dust down and bugs out for the spray lacquer. I set up a fan on the outside for air removal. There are plenty of areas where air can enter on the bottom and corners, so no need for an intake area. I think it will work fine. I'll wear a respirator.

It took us about three hours to get setup to spray. We ended up getting two coats on about half of the organ and one set of legs. He was full of tips for me. I set up the organ and took a photo. Today I sat in the tone generator and bolted it down. I also ordered the trek preamp, for those taking notes. That hurt!

Yeah Darryl. It cost about $300.00 MORE than I thought. If you know anything about Hammond organs, the early models did not have percussion like the classic B3 model I've built. That was an extra charge from Trek II. They already have the circuitry in the preamp, but said the CV model I have required a separate unit. Go figure. Oh well....Anyway, today I installed the vibrato line box. I flipped the organ over to make it easier. It still wasn't easy due to the type fasteners they used. But I persevered and got it on. I took picture of it upside down.

I just received the new preamp for the organ. This is a digital unit that replaces the heavier tube preamp. It also includes a reverb unit, and a unit to add percussion to the organ. Hammond organs this old did not have percussion, and a B3 model does. Here's a picture of the new parts. I'm in the deep end now!

Well, I learned a little late in life to swim....so I guess that still applies. I'm learning as I go about Hammond organs. I've always said, if you can read and add, you can do anything. I think that is about to be put to the test for me!
I'll tell you everything I know about Hammond organs. The church I attended as a kid had one and if one were to inadvertently bump the speaker, it sounded like thunder. Hope that helps.

I'm going to try to finish the organ project this month. It will be next month when I'll make the second flight case to carry the lower legs, pedal, and cables. I'm also going to make a spot in the second case for my new Korg Kronos 73 which I'll be playing on top of the organ. All of my equipment will then be in just two flight cases. Today I began staining the music rack. I decided to use the old CV rack which is walnut, hoping that the cypress/walnut contrast after staining will not be too noticeable. I think it will do fine. I had to make one of the curved ends of the rack which somehow got thrown away during my construction! Anyway, the right end that I made out of walnut will also House the trek reverb on off switch. That's why there is a hole in that end. It was a trip to fit, but it turned out perfect! I test fit the rack on my project and it fit well. The electronics and soldering of the new Trek preamp has gone well...the supplied instructions were good, and the company has great customer help. Pineywoods has been a constant help for me in engineering minor components to help the project along. He is one of the good...grumpy old men!
Here is a photo of wiring progress. The electronics are 90% completed. The music stand above had to be installed in order to hook up the last few switches. The bracing board was removed of course.

Well, the CV/B3 project hit a major snag today. After the start run switch did nothing, I decided to call a technician, and he was in the area and stopped by. He replaced the start switch and it fired up...but major problems were then realized. First time it has been turned on. Anyway, the note contacts were screwed on multiple notes causing constant tones. We decided to use a working replacement CV from his warehouse. I have to remove the entire organ from the cabinet, and take it to his warehouse where we will install a working CV. Oh well...I will persevere. At least on my end, the trek install was good. I've learned a tremendous amount about the Hammond organ over the last year and a half. All is well.
I'm glad I wasn't there when you learned you had to take the organ out of the cabinet. :)
Planman, this reminds me of an experience I had years ago when the boss and I thought we were finished with a big project only to find that we had to tear into it again.
The boss and I were working late one night putting together an Weinig moulder. Tried it and one of the spindles would spin for about 30 seconds and quit. I felt like crying, was too tired to cuss. I was at my wits end. Boss says. "Go home and have a beer. Meet me here at 10 am. I learned a whole lot from that man.
Similar to what happened to me here (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,47709.msg936345.html#msg936345) when I made a 44" opening from the existing Cabin into the Cabin Addition. She said that it should be an "opening" rather than a "doorway" so 44" became 94". ;D
Edit: And then as sometime happens, I got hung up on the Cabin Addition (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,47709.0.html) topic for over an hour. :P
Hey, life happens! At this point, I'm enjoying it all, good and bad. For those who care, I weighed the completed organ main body today before I begin disassembly. It weighs 185 lbs...quite a bit less than an original Hammond B3. Of course, the flight case weighs a bit, but I'll be able to maneuver it up stairs alone...that was the goal...to set it up myself.
I am looking forward to seeing everything after completion. Maybe a video so that we can even listen. ;D
