Sugar maple dead one side - possible causes?
« on: June 10, 2022, 08:32:04 AM »
Hi all, what could cause death on one side of the tree in a sugar maple like this? DBH about 35", open grown in a yard. I suspect something with the roots but there is no history of soil disturbance in the area. Maybe a soil pathogen? Just behind the sugar maple is a Norway maple that shares a root zone with the dying tree and it shows no signs of stress. It doesn't look like the tree was ever hit by a lightning strike. It's been declining for about 10-15 years.

A few other trees in the yard within about 50-75' of this tree have had major failures in the past (red oak, some sort of pine/fir, serviceberry). Maybe that's relevant info as well? Not sure.

Thanks in advance

It could be a girdling root, but more likely maple decline. Google these for more information that may apply,
