Well, learned another $$$ lesson. I pulled the cable out of the UTV winch on my logging arch. Simple fix right? Yeah, so I thought too. I put the end back in the slot and tightened the set screw to hold it but wound it over the top when I ran it back through my Fairlead rollers. Bad move. When I pulled on my next heavy log I pulled the winch free from the mountings and destroyed it. Should have rolled it under so when I pulled it would pull tighter against mountings. I checked the new ones in the stores and that is how they are wound also.

Oh well, I may keep it for parts as the motor and pins and such are still useable.

I had never thought about it mattering which direction the cable winds. Well, it does so a word to the wise. Make sure your cable is rolling out the bottom of the winch and not over the top.

I'll second that one!!
All of my winches are very specific about being wound out from the mount side/bottom of the drum.

Thanks TNAZ...it keeps me sane!

If you are sane what are you doing on this site? This site is for sawmillers, not sane folks. :D :D :D

Fair Enough!!
If I was sane, I wouldn't have the habit of taking on about 30 times the amount of projects that a reasonable person would.
I see that most here share the same affliction...It feels like home!

The more projects I take on, the greater my chances of actually completing one right?

I like this thought and approach!  I have got to remember this one as I can use it!
