Hi, I am finally building myself a proper workbench. Its laminated 2x4 pine top, for the end vise i am considering Veritas twin screw vise which needs hardwood rear jaw. As I dont mind a minor challenge, I was thinking that I would cut a long dovetail joint to the end of benchtop/endcap and only glue the one side of it - that would allow the top to expand somewhat. Can somebody tell me, why this isnt a good idea ,what am i missing?

Circular saw, chainsaw, drill, non electric hand tools.

I like the idea of sliding dovetail, I hate the idea of construction grade 2x4s. Even kiln dried soft maple would be way better than 20% moisture 2x4s
