E-classic door gasket
« on: March 03, 2011, 09:33:36 AM »
Did I manage to ruin my door gasket already?  :'(

I am getting a lot of crap running down the front of the unit. So i looked the other day where it is happening and there appears to be burnt rubber on the door frame.

The unit has only been on since January (first year). Which seems fast for killing a gasket but I could have been doing something wrong / dumb too.

Here are some pics (they are a little big, I left that that way on purpose for detail sake, (1.2 mb each range)

Upsnake,

If you have a leak, either via visual smoke, or creosote leaking around the door seal, then I would think it most likely a bad gasket or door adjustment solution.

I have not had a problem with my door gasket in 1 1/2 years of operation.

     Is the gasket still pliable?

Have you tried adjusting the door gap?

Upsnake-

I just noticed this problem myself within the last 3 weeks.  I got a buildup of creosote in the lower right door area and needed to clean it off the door and the "sill".  I have a few streaks down the front of my unit, just as your pics demonstrate.

It seems to have stopped once I cleaned up the creosote.  My plan is to change out the gasket at the end of this heating season as part of my end of the year maintenance.  I have not noticed any smoke coming form this area and the stove is performing well.  Doctorb

I will check the gasket when i get home tonight.
I am not sure how to adjust the door. I will have to look in the instruction manual and see what it says. :)

Thanks doc.

For cleaning was it just scrapping it off or? I have been leery of trying to scrape things on the door, don't want to damage the door.

I am getting the same as far as no smoke is escaping, and the performance if fine, it just looks terrible. Haha.

Yes, just scrape it off the gasket and the door, as well as the sill edge opposite where it dripped.  I just didn't notice the buildup early enough, and some creosote got between the gasket and the sill, and with the stove stil hot, it just ran down the front, as your pics show.

Your pics show where your gasket is kind of turned under or displaced with creosote (one of the two).  Make that part of the gasket look like the gasket on the rest of the door and you'll be good to go.

I had the same problem with the creasote but it was because the inside of the door was warped. The heatsheild bolts broke and is pulling apart. covered under warrenty just have to take it off and bring it in.

I cleaned up last night. Tried couple things to get the streaks of creosote off the front unsuccessfully before putting some hot water on it to wash off the other things i tried and it came right off. (wish i would have tried that first haha).

Checked it this morning and there wasn't any new streaks.

I will have to wait a couple days to see for sure though, i am letting the boiler go out for the weekend for a controlled water temp test.

I am going out of town next weekend and want to make sure the gas furnace in the house will hold the water temp for a couple of days.
