I remember that mod, and it's an excellent one MM. I don't have a diesel tach on my engine, but an educated guess would be 900-1000 rpm as it sits on low idle.

My book says that mine should idle at ~1500. 


 
Here is a picture taken today at idle.  14.5 volts.  The voltage changes very little from idle to sawing speed.

I have a manual tach that I hold to the end of the crankshaft.
