Title: Just purchased a McCulloch 14". Doesn't run, what should I look at first?
Post by: RyanM91 on December 19, 2016, 07:40:25 PM
I just purchased a McCulloch 14", model MS1435. It's a 38cc engine. The previously owner CLAIMED it was only ran twice and now it doesn't run. I purchased this little guy for $25 and would like to get it running. The primer bulb needs to be replaced (cracked). What else should I take a look at other than the plug and intake/exhaust to see if the engine was burned up or ran too hot (2 stroke)? I do not know a whole lot about small engine repair, but trying to teach myself. Thank you for all the help.

The first thing I would look at are the fuel lines, especially since the primer bulb is cracked.

If the primer bulb is cracked replace the fuel lines, theres also a chance that the carb will have an issue too. A friend of mine gave me a poulan wildthing, primer bulb and fuel lines had to be replaced first just to get it to run, then the rpm's would go up and down depending on the angle you hold the saw....so a new carb for it.

Fuel bulb cracked, means lines, carb and fuel bulb all need replacing.  It'll probably run after that.  Do not hesitate to buy the cheap Chinese replacement carbs, they work great.  Sounds like the cheap ethanol gas got to it.

Poor a little bit of mixed gas straight in the carb and see if it will run until it burns that out first.

If you haven't messed with them enough to tell if it has compression just by pulling the rope everything else you do is a waste of time if it doesn't have compression.

If you think it has compression and it still won't run the mix out check for spark by using a jumper between the plug body and the metal cylinder fins which you should be able to get to somewhere.

If it has compression and spark then start on the fuel delivery.

Here is the Illustrated Parts List:

You can see how parts go together. Maybe your fuel lines/fuel pickup are ok - it is a pain to replace them on this saw. A plastic case half needs to come off - lotsa disassembly. And don't pinch fuel lines when case half goes back on - been there, done that. Although, I have routed fuel lines into the tank w/o disassembly but is REAL time consuming.
I'd bet your carb diaphragms are stiff and varnish in screen and passages. Maybe a new carb and purge bulb will fix it up.
The carb should be a Zama C1Q-M36 or Walbro WT438.

Thank you for the advice, everyone. I purchased a new fuel line kit that included new primers. I took the entire chainsaw apart to clean it and make sure everything else was fine on it.
