Title: Not spending
Post by: moodnacreek on May 17, 2022, 12:50:21 PM
Got my '91 diesel pick up out of the shed, took the car cover off and ran it up on planks to change the oil. She is in nice condition and only gets used to go to camp. So the plan was to order a new headliner and reproduction tail gate trim panel [$ 400] in red.  And then there is the 1944 ford jeep that needs at least $ 1000 spent on new trim [ top, seats etc.]                              But  by mid summer I need to start filling fuel tanks and I don't think the diesel pick up will make many trips this summer, have to squeeze into wife's Honda [non Ford!]   I didn't order anything.

I'm looking at a nice older fifth wheel but it needs 4 tires and maybe brakes. Then there is fuel at over $2 per liter so can't go too far.

I heard two other people say basically the same thing today.   People are going to be staying home a lot and not buying much this summer.   Wont be good for a already bad economy.

Wife is going to retire from her town job in July. Since Covid had cooled some we had planned on buying a used diesel motorhome and do some traveling. With the cost of fuel and everything else that has went up and investments cooling some. We have stopped looking at the motorhomes and looked at some used fifth wheel's as we have a one ton truck. Went to pickup my chemicals for the farm yesterday for the summer and they were twice what they were last year. Starting to get out of the mood for traveling. We do have a trip planned for June I think we will cut it short and just stay in motels. I think I am going to keep my camper money in the bank.

If these prices continue, the days of the summer driving vacations are over. ::)

I am starting  to spend on stocking up on things like flour,  sugar, rice, and basic necessities after seeing  what high fuel prices are doing to availability and pricing of them.

I see Wal-Mart had a disappointing quarter; sales volumes were holding but shifting from profitable discretionary items to lower margin groceries while operating costs rise.

The result of take home pay not keeping pace with inflation. Costs more to fill the gas tank and buy beanie weenies so less for everything else. Up until now it has been spend, spend, spend to stay ahead of the curve. Now people will soon realize the next dollar may not be quite as easy to come by as the last one. A couple generations have never seen those days.

7 miles from town so it costs me minimum a gallon of diesel fuel at $5.30 to make that trip.  Normal shopping trip might cost me $8.00.  Usually go twice a week for fresh fruit and other perishables.  Walmart home delivery is looking better every day.  I can get it now and drone delivery is in trials.  I suspect it will be here soon.

Just placed a nut and bolt order with Amazon.  Less time and cheaper price than a trip to TSC (8 mile round trip).

Besides disappointment from Wal-Mart, Target was also spreading gloom.  1,200 point drop on the Dow today.....scared to look.....

Not over for everyone, just more expensive.

Now, if fuel is not available then the driving is over.

As far as vacations go, it's not so much the gas, it's the "squeeze" with everything else. I can drive from my location to Cape May, NJ and back on a tank of gas in the Grand Cherokee. Not a big deal, and not a big percentage of the total cost of the trip. The condo, the groceries, going out to eat, going to bars, (frequently :) ). The increase in all that will be more than the increase in fuel costs to get there.

Then there's the squeeze at home. Everything costs more just to live and it's there every day, not just for a week or two. Lotta folks just aren't going to have the disposable cash to take the trip.

Yeah, I'm definitely feeling it too.  I've been driving our extra car to work.  It gets 30mpg and burns gas while my truck gets 16mpg and burns diesel.  My boys and a friend and his son are going to Canada fishing next month.  Originally the plan was to take 2 vehicles, but now we will  be all riding in my truck or their truck, haven't decided which.  With the price of diesel, it will still cost more to drive the one truck than it would have to make the same trip with 2 trucks a year ago.

The only thing I'm considering spending money on is a bicycle.

I've been thinking about a bicycle but thought it would be nice to get one with a battery to help going up hills.  Asked a friend that knows about such things and he showed me a picture of one he bought.  My first new car was a 69 GTO for $3,000 and the bicycle he showed me was double that price!

After rethinking, I'm going to find someplace to ride where its all down hill. :D

I just had a company that wanted to send me one for free to make a video about. This is the one
https://newurtopia.com/products/urtopia-carbon-e-bike
Carbon fiber and voice control with up to 80 mile range. Only weights 30 lbs. I turned it down because it was $2500 and would  have cost me over $800 in taxes for something I didn't want plus I couldn't make my neighbors watch a fat guy with  a beard constantly  buzz up and down the street.
