"In preparation for this change, CDC recommends clinical laboratories and testing sites that have been using the CDC 2019-nCoV RT-PCR assay select and begin their transition to another FDA-authorized COVID-19 test. CDC encourages laboratories to consider adoption of a multiplexed method that can facilitate detection and differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses. Such assays can facilitate continued testing for both influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and can save both time and resources as we head into influenza season. Laboratories and testing sites should validate and verify their selected assay within their facility before beginning clinical testing."

It appears that the "detects Flu as Covid" isn't correct.

The CDC would like testers to start using newer kits that test for BOTH Covid and Flu, and differentiate between them, which is obviously a more useful diagnosis than a simple yes/no test for Covid.

Fact Check-CDC lab update on COVID-19 PCR tests misinterpreted | Reuters

QuoteNew guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) withdrawing their request for Emergency Use Authorization for a coronavirus test introduced in February 2020 do not mean that these polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests have failed to differentiate between COVID-19 and Influenza, as users online claim. Rather, the agency is advising the adoption of new tests that can check patients for both SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza viruses.
So main difference is that if you had Influenza and went for a Covid test, you would get a "negative" result. You might actually have Influenza, and not know it.

So the flu didn't actually disappear like they claimed it did last year?

No one died of the flu here in NZ in 2020, and you can't say they were misreported as Covid, as there was only 20 something deaths linked to that.

So here at least the flu did "disappear".  I can't vouch for the US numbers, but it's conceivable they are similar.  It's also possible that Covid took out a lot of folks that might normally die from the flu in any given year? But that doesn't change it from being the Covid virus that actually took them out.

Of course with international travel starting up again, a new strain of the flu is bound to come back and make up for lost time.  :-\

Influenza was bound to be reduced with all the health measures and less travel and less socialization. I haven't had the flu in years, so for me I guess flue died out 8 years, if you want to use that logic. :D  The CDC doesn't speak for the rest of us, and have made errors. CDC recently made an error in which COVID strain was cause of the recent spike in the US. It turns out to be Delta, but Omicron won't be far behind if you look at London and SA. The data accumulating always lags behind lab results.

Flu update from Canada. 20-21 season.

Quote
QuoteDuring the 2020–2021 Canadian influenza season, no community circulation of influenza occurred.
QuoteOnly 69 positive detections of influenza were reported, and influenza percent positivity did not exceed 0.1%.
QuoteInfluenza indicators were at historical lows compared with the previous six seasons, with no laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks or severe outcomes being reported by any of the provinces and territories.
QuoteGlobally, influenza circulation was at historically low levels in both the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.
QuoteThe decreased influenza activity seen in Canada and globally is concurrent with the implementation of non-pharmaceutical public health measures to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Might not have made the news headlines, but similar levels to what NZ has seen.

No surprise. Exactly what one would expect. Plus most of us aren't going in to a hospital for just a sniffle these days. In the past had people going in for a hang nail. I know someone personally like that. Even his wife shakes her head. A product of being spoiled and coddled to death by his grandmother. :D :D

40 COVID hospitalizations here in NB, 440 in Maine.
