Ive a 12v solenoid valve which appears to not be getting power
(it runs debarked on Cooks sawmill)   what would be the best way to test
to see if its getting 12 volts?   Ive looked at the wiring an connections

Can you get close enough to the electromagnet with a screwdriver to feel the pull when you hit the switch?

ill try that.   along with multi meter.  i just don't want to cause any damage to it

work your way out to the valve, and back to ground.
I like the test light that looks like an ice pick with a long wire and clip.  hard to hold two leads.   clip to ground and check each connection.  you should her a click if it moves the solenoid.  Is it a valve or a switch?  you can then check for continuity across the high amp leads.  If it is a valve, you should hear something.  you can also run a 12-volt jumper to the 12V lead. Do you have a pic?  I have burned a few up from use over the years.  :)
