Title: Black (Cherry) Birch Fungus
Post by: bjorn on April 05, 2012, 03:37:10 PM
Several of the Black Birch trees in my woodlot have a bright orange fungus growing on them.  It seems to be coming from places where sap may have leaked out from an old scar or old branch.  Anyone seen this? or know if it is a problem?

I don't know if it is the same but I have seen it on pin cherry. Bright orange, almost flouresant, usually the center is rotten if I cut them.

bjorn, the black birches I cut in the winter ooze sap out of their stumps in the spring and after a while an orange mass will form over the damp stump. I think it is some kind of fungus. I don't think you have to worry about it because it seems to be normal for that tree.

Thanks cutterboy!  It does seem to be the case.  The trees seem fine.  I suppose it is just a fungus that gorges on the sap.
