KFC goes well with boating.  My best friend from high school and all the way back to cub scouts is named Greg. He lives in Loveland Colorado and when we get together (when we were younger) we would do a whirlwind of activities over the 2, 3, or 4 days we had together.  At his place we would golf in the morning, windsurf in the afternoon.  then off to a place to eat or cookout.  After sunburn and sore muscle, his wife Carla would have to push on me to help me get out of the cab of their little Toyota pick-up.

So they came to KC when I was in med school.  We went to oceans of fun, a Royals game, and other things less memorable.  We planned to go to Lawrence and sail, and we were running out of time.  We drove over and picked up KFC and a bottle of Sutter home white zinfandel.  Good college wine.  Gregs sister Christi had come along.  We headed to Clinton Lake.  My boat was a 14-foot O'Day javelin.  It was getting dark, and we saw "heat lightening" off in the distance.  I often sailed there at night.  Great night, warm with a nice breeze.  made across the lake and headed back.  The wind stopped and then came out of the other direction.  The temp dropped about 10 degrees.  I told Christi to put on a life jacket.  The wind and rain whipped up.  I had to stand over the tiller so i could shift weight with everyone else on the port side.  Christ was trying to get into the cuddy cabin.  We made it to the marina but could not navigate well enough in the gusty wind at night to my slip, so made it to a float/dock and tied up.  Jump in the car and go to a Dennies for breakfast.  I was high as a kite from the experience.  Christi was shell shocked.  She for years never rode in a boat.  She died of covid a few years back.  Drove back to KC at 3 am.  When the sun was up, called the marina who was able to toe my boat to the slip.  When I had time to put stuff away, there was KFC floating in 8 inches of water and the whole boat had a nice sheen and slippery feel due to the chicken.  we have become more reasonable over the year.  great memories.  about 1986.

TV news said still 14,000 + without power in NC. Lot more without power in other states as well. FL had the most without.

Sawmills and Milling / The Opening Face
Last post by Magicman - Today at 08:43:29 AM
I realize that we all have different sawing/business profiles and markets but I consider my opening face as the most important cut that I make on any log.  The opening face determines the position of every other face opening and ultimately my saw through.

After I load a log, I turn it and give it a good visual looking for foreign stuff as well as what may be good about the log.  After turning my opening face up, I determine my targets within that log which may or may not be marked with my crayon.  Since piths are generally off-center, I level the log....not the pith.

Targets are set and the opening face has been opened.  (The camera angle is screwy.)

IMG_5664.JPG
After turning the first time, I will saw down to the width of my intended cants. (Again, camera angle.)
IMG_5665.JPG
After the third face opening and the log has been split into my targeted cants, I add my side support extensions before making this final turn.

IMG_5666~0.JPG
The final turn is made and the extensions prevent the top cant from spilling over the side supports.

Another view of this final turn.

The final turn has been safely made.

The extensions are removed and the side supports are completely lowered for the saw through.

There was a swell on this end so the first pass was 3 slabs.

Jeff did not remove the age from the posts. Jeff hacked the age into the old version of the software. The new version of the software was totally rewritten from the old, so it coughed out my hack, and because this version is so much different,  I've had to enlist my 30 year old brain that could figure out how to replace it. So far I've not been able to locate that part of my brain.

G'day Longtime thanks for the help I will try that on the next eucalypt I cut.
On a different note I picked up work in a pine mill running a number one bench and a 60 inch breakdown saw, boy does that beat breaking down with a chainsaw.

That's what happened to me August of 2023.   A mill was ordered and the customer never responded to attempts from the dealer to contact him.

I was next on the list for an LT50.  Fortunately it was just as I ordered.

FWIW, the jury is still out on the high performance guides.  They decrease the cut width a bit and they made blade changes a little more challenging.  Not sure how they improve cutting because I've not cut without them on this mill.

The debarker, on the other hand is a must have.

Never used a ride along seat but understand it's relatively easy to remove and reinstall.  This mill has command control which I really like.

I just realized that comes out to $7.70/log! You done good! coming into the market at the high end of the price range. I am the highest priced guy in NYS at $6/log. If I could get your price, I would quit my day job, oh wait. ffcheesy

I for got to mention earlier, but if you are going to do it regularly, best to get yourself a good chiropractor. I am on my way to see mine in about an hour. :wink_2:

Not gonna see any sun here today. It took all last evening for the dew point and the air temp to coincide and allow rain, which started just after midnight. We are now well over 1/2" of rain and a lot more coming through the day. Glad I got the grass cut yesterday, this rain would have forced me to get a brush hog or sickle mower to cut it. ffcheesy
