Since the weather turned colder, and the humidity dropped, I have had a problem with the itch.  Had to give up taking a shower every evening,  skin drys out and I itch all over.  Only thing that seems to help is baby oil, or vaseline. Wife bought me some hand cream, did not work.  She was too tight to buy the gold bond anti itch cream.

Almost hate to ask, where is the dry skin?  Feet?  Elbows? Arms?

Water softener will help, softener salt is cheaper than jars of creams. :D

Mother used to complain of dry skin at the other house. No complaints here, running a water softener.

A few dollars more just might solve the problem.

I've had that problem for years, legs are the worse but arms/elbows also. The cheap moisturizers from the dollar store work but best used immediately after a shower while your skin is still damp.

Corn huskers, bag balm or beeswax with mineral oil are my go to's. After several weeks of masonry my hands are "keep your hands to yourself" soft  :D.

Check the RH in the house, too dry don't help.

My legs get very dry in fall & winter. I start wearing long underwear when it's 40 or so and finally bought some good skin cream. CeraVe is much better than the other name brands I've tried and the moisture lasts a couple few days. Bonus: it is truly unscented.

I got the stuff in a tub rather than lotion. Cost $15 but it's worth it.

I had the dry skin itch problem a few years ago, asked the Dr about it and he recommended DON'T take a shower EVERY DAY, shower every second or third day and let your skin moisturize itself.

A little different story if you're a hard worker and work up a sweat daily but then, mostly rinse off in the shower rather than scrub!

His final answer:  Less soap!

I keep a pan of water on top of the wood stove, but have not had to keep the fire going all the time, just intermittent.  This is the first fall this has happened, was thinking it was because of turning 70.  Will get some better hand cream.  Fall harvest drug out for 6 weeks, and cutting beans and milo could not help taking a shower every night. All the bumps on my neck got touchy from having to turn around and check the grain level in the back window of the cab.  Need to get a mirror and mount it to check the grain level.

I am not a doctor and don't play one on TV, not did I stay in a Holiday Inn last night but..... I think we all suffer from that dry skin in the fall and winter. I get it worst when we have bad winters and I am out doing a lot of snow removal in very bad weather and the skin takes a beating.
My wife also does that 'cheapest generic stuff' thing on me when I ask for suggestions. I have found that Bag Balm works for me, but holy cow it's a lot more expensive that it was 20 years ago since it became some kind of sheik thing to use for the millennials. I used to get the 1# tubs but now have to buy it in little 1 oz. cans. It's worth it for me. I use ivory soap and during the warmer months shower a bunch, but in the winter I cut that back. I won't give up on Ivory, no scents, no nonsense, nothing fancy and it's worked since I was a baby. I use head and shoulders shampoo and I do my hair after I wash the rest of me, so maybe there is something in the shampoo that does my skin a little good. Still, there are times my skin crawls, keeps me from sleeping and makes me crazy. Then it's time for the bag balm or some other cream, which always works.
Good luck. I hear good things about the gold bond stuff too for decades now, but have never used it. Sometimes cheap doesn't cut it.

I have at least a 2 pound plastic tub of Bag Balm at the hardware store I work at.

I was going to suggest most decent feed stores around here still have sizable containers of bag balm for sale. It's gotta be cheaper than buying the ones that will fit in skinny jeans pockets.  ;D

I only see the 1oz and 1lb cans now for pretty good money. The next size up is 4.5 lbs and runs about 40-50 bucks. That would last me more than my lifetime, a little goes a long way, I like the smell but others call it an 'odor' and don't care for it.
If you don't mind, could you take a look at your store's price and the size of that tub? Do they do mail order? I have a 1# tub around here somewhere and I can't find it. I gave up looking 6 months ago. I got a 1oz can in a stocking stuffer a few years ago and I am making that last, but another 1# can would probably get me to my grave comfortably. ;D

4.5 pound bag balm

Sorry it's a 4.5 size. Day off today. I will check tomorrow. Yes mail order is available, but I can help you out, if you want it.

Thanks Cfarm! I didn't mean to put you out. That 4.5# tub would last me 3 lifetimes as I don't have any cows. ;D I did note they have the 8oz can also which would be just about perfect and the $10. price is just fine but the $20.+ for shipping made me spit coffee thru my nose.
I am still good with the little can I have for now. Some winters are worse than others and there are years I barely open the can while other years I worry about running out. Sure wish I was closer and could spend an afternoon walking that store. I haven't been to Maine since the 90's and have family and several friends up that way.

are you guys getting this in small random patches -like between the web of the fingers and between fingers and toes- that get red, cracked and scaly... or is it whole slabs of body part.. like an entire leg or arm?

@Old Greenhorn I think you missed seeing the forest through the trees.

Buy the big tub which will save you on shipping per ounce and then get some cows. Problem solved and an economic win!  :D

Well Mike, I can't speak for the others (and I'm sure not going to investigate ;D) but for myself these are isolated areas. Cracking skin is the worst of it. Mostly it is the areas exposed to abuse such as the fronts of my thighs when in that New England cycle of cold, wet, icy storms and the cleanup work required. Think of soaking pants that are nearly frozen to your legs. Also wrists and hands. Rarely forearms and more protected areas. Once in a while neck, ears, or face. Generally the stuff I use, even though it stinks a bit, clears things up in a day or so and it takes the itch and minor pain out.
SS, when I run the economics of your plan it doesn't quite come out the way you suggest. Given all your praises of working with cows, I don't see a reason to run into that wall.  ;D :D
