After searching and reading off and on over the last several weeks, I have not seen a measurement for the gap between rollers on a tooth desetting device.

I run 0.045 blades and set at 0.025.   My math and thinking tells me I should have less than 0.095 space between rollers.  That's 0.045+0.25+0.25 or blade thickness plus left set plus right set.

But just how much less than 0.095?  0.060? 0.070? 0.080?

The roller will only press the body of the blade and one tooth at a time.  That would mean 0.70, given 0.045 for the blade and 0.025 for set.  That would bring teeth close to my set number.  It should bring an over set tooth back in.

Is spring back a concern?

The rollers I'm using are metal rollers designed to keep the tail of a trailer from dragging.

Springback, flex and any freeplay in the mechanism as the pressure is put on one side then the other when desetting.  Take an older blade, run it through and keep adjusting until you find out whats a good setting you can live with.

Back when I had my blade roller made, I specified a gap between the rollers of .055, I had always used .045 blades.  That allowed for a little "wiggle room" when getting the blade in between the rollers!

I just now went out to the garage and double-checked, and the rollers still have the gap of .055!

I use the roller for every blade that I sharpen.  I pull the blade "backwards" through the rollers "twice", and it works very well!

There are a few pictures of my blade roller, desetter, unsetter, etc. in my gallery!

I used the same type of rollers that Sawer Ted is planning to use. I made one fixed and one adjustable. I used a fine thread bolt running through a welded nut to give it some adjustment. That way I can start out with no tension and close up the gap to get the desired down set. I vertically mounted it on a mini-receiver hitch set up using a 3/4" square shaft sliding into a square tube welded to a flat plate. I then mounted it to my dual tooth setter bench and use the band advancing lever to draw the band through. I just lift the unit up out of the receiver hitch when done. I think I posted some pictures of in in old posts from a couple of years ago. I found it works well on WM bands but other brands tend to snap an occasional tip off. I don't use it much anymore but it is there if needed. I just use a small hand tool I made out of a 3/8" bolt to down set if needed as I set the band.
