My first post on this forum. Anybody have experience sawing and using ginkgo?  We've acquired four 20-24" ginkgo sawlogs. The wood saws out nicely - feels and looks like white pine. But no one has ever used it before!  Looking for ideas on use and handling / drying.  Thanks!

Welcome to the forum  :)
Wow, Ginko! That's really cool. If I remember correctly, some species in that genus date back to prehistoric times...

I have. It has superb texture for planing and carving.  It also seems to have great rot resistance.  I have slabs of it outside not under much cover, that have lasted about 20 years. Closed grain without much texture or character.

Thanks.  We made up some into 8/4 and 12/4 for re-sawing into carving stock.  We were considering making  some wide board flooring, but we probably won't see many logs like this again and might be better to spread it around more anyway. Good to know about the rot resistance.

Sawed 3 logs of it in 10/4 about 5 years ago.  Air dried it, then kiln dried it  and sold it to a custom furniture make in Switzerland.

It was the best pay day I have ever had!  I wont say what I sold it for but I will say it was over 30$ bf! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

also interested in hearing about this wood as ginkgo trees are planted fairly commonly around here as street trees, and i may be able to source some.

Some of us are concerned with production, not social media.  I grew up and was taught to get the job done and then go to the next, not take pictures and pat myself on the back.

You need to make connections with live edge furniture makers... That's where the real money is made with Ginkgo.

Thanks for the photos, Clark. ;D

A big part of this forum is to share information. A picture is worth a thousand words.
