Been sawing SYP 2x6s for my log supplier.  1336 board feet.

 

Also cut my first 6x16 door header beam for my sawmill shed.  The oddest thing happened while cutting it.  I put on a new blade for this log.  I had cut two sides flat and was fixing to cut the third side, when I heard a bang as the blade broke.  I wasn't in the cut.  The blade was nowhere near anything and just bang, it broke right near a tip.  Anyone else experienced this?

That is what I thought too.  Until I had it in my hands and saw that it broke about 1/8th inch from a sharp tip.

Strange place for a blade to break. I have broke a few but pretty much catch them all before they go now. After a couple breaks it's noticeable in the cut as the sound it has. Tsk tsk tsk as it moves laterally back and forth at the crack. Easy to see as the blade is stopped at end of cut also. But every once in a while it gets ta.

Yes it happens, if that's a WM band they may come good for it assuming there is no sign of damage.  They do cover weld breaks if the band is rather new.

After my portable sawing job last week, I am going to try and figure out how to do more of these.

One problem I have is keeping the lubemizer jets clean. They seem to always get clogged and isn't an issue when I'm sawing here because I just take them out and blow them out with compressed air.

Wasn't an option at customers site so I removed the jets and drilled them out to 5/64 (smallest bit I had). Will see how that does.

Get yourself a compressed air tank from NAPA or similar place, the kind that holds about five gallon,  or enough to pump a car tire.  Fill it up and take it with you.   It will hold enough to blow out the nozzle several times.

I milled some 30" diameter but only 36" - 56" lengths of walnut this morning.  A friend brought them to me the day before my engine quit last month.  So I got around to sawing them today.  We had a few inches of snow the other day and these logs had snow on them.  I did a less than thorough job of cleaning the snow off and hit a white rock from my driveway.  Dang it.  That should have been avoided.  Made some really nice, if short, 8/4 slabs as wide as 25".  He had gotten these logs for free, but could only load them on his trailer in short chunks.  He's a friend from elementary school and I guess I will keep some of the slabs and deduct an hour from the charge.  There's gonna be a lot of slabs.

I sawed mostly ERC today along with a bit of Red Oak, Cypress, and SYP.


 
A couple of the ERC logs had "character".


 
But they still turned out some purdy stuff.



That brown line is a shadow from an above limb.


 


 
And da log dawg was in charge of this trailer load.  The total yield was 1002 bf.

   Pretty wood. I am glad the dog approves. You can just send that load on up here. My last customer came by and bought a few walnut boards and I had to move my entire stack looking through it for him. He is a repeat customer and makes crematorium boxes for our local funeral home so short pieces work fine. He wanted cedar  too but I don't have any and checked with a neighbor who had some a year or so back and asked me if I knew of anybody looking but he has since used it up. He said he has a few trees and may have me saw them in a while.

   I think while I have my walnut down I will just put it on the RAS and table saw and clean it up in short pieces and remove the sapwood. I figure it may move then. We will see.

   I have 2 firm orders to do as soon as the 6" of snow we got last night clears out. I need to resaw a few boards tomorrow for a repeat customer who wants them planed. I don't normally plane them but only about 60 bf or so. I have to rip them to fit my planer and they are 18-22 inches wide. I'll make them up to fit 20" shelves.

Lynn ya gotta love days spent sawing cedar. I have a small but crazy whack of 25' - 32' ERC logs to do myself. But some of em got some serious heart rot in the butt log.

X2 on the air tank.  Hopefully you have better luck with the hole than I had.  Did the same thing for the same reason, ended up buying replacement jets as the new hole didn't give me a good spray pattern.  
What are you using for a mixture in your lube tank?

I've been using straight washer fluid with a couple of glugs of dawn....Only had issues one time with some large fresh SYP and even those weren't too bad.

   I did 2 pre-site visits today to help the customer figure where to set up for sawing. The first was an Aussie couple at the end of nowhere bordering a local wildlife management area and overlooking the New River about where I end my fishing and wife's photo trips when we come up that way. He had a bunch of really small logs but they won't take a lot of effort to saw and he has a friend who will be bringing some more. My next client was only a few miles down the road and a lady from Utah (I can't remember anyone I ever met from Utah) who wants max length logs (I suggested 20'9" and make sure they are sawed with the ends square) sawed 6" thick for a log cabin extension to their current home. Logs look to be about 12-14 inches SED and left live edge. They plan to use them in June and invited me to the workshop. She said the flat surfaces will be the inner and outer walls and they will alternate the logs head to toe and notch them to connect. It sounds real interesting and I will plan to attend situation permitting. It looks like 2-3 cuts, flip, repeat, move the finished log and do the next one. Looks like I might get 2-3 4/4 boards off each log. I figured we will spend more time loading and handling than sawing.

I've never heard of cutting flat sides for in and out and stacking the live edges.  That seems like a lot of work to hide the natural edges and only get to see the flat sides.  I guess it still maximizes the height of the log stack and you get to use the side wood to make some boards.

   Its a new one to me but actually the log barn in my avatar is built like that. You can see some of it here in the pix below I took during some flooding problems we had a couple years ago.


 This was a 2 story barn that collapsed due to rot at the base on the uphill side. My son and his buddy dismantled and rebuilt it as a single story on my lot over 25 years ago when he was about 16. They did a good job for a couple of teens. He chinked it some with cement and great foam but when originally built there was no chinking. I'd guess this barn is well over 100 years old. The logs were hewn with an adze - not sawed.

Quite a few, maybe most - were built that way around Va, WVa, NC, parts of Ohio. Don't know why that style log was predominant. Maybe Don P has some insight on that.

   It took a pretty fair timber framer to cut those notches like that. I am looking forward to going to the workshop and may see if the customer is interested in having our local weekly paper come watch. She said they already have people from several states away coming to watch and learn. 

   I have seen other old barns like that around here. Some had chinking but barns and such often did not. Lots had a board nailed across the gap to keep the air out.

How close are you to Hot Springs?  That's where Barnwood Builders are located. They specialize in taking down and restoring old cabins like that. Timberframes also.

   I don't know anything about Hot Springs. I am thinking they are located around Lewisburg WV about 40 miles from here. Seems like we drive past their laydown yard over there.

   I sawed for a Doctor less than 20 miles from here (Actually I was showing him how to operate his LT50 - sweet machine - that he bought but did not know how to use.) who lived in a home the Bowe crew had built. He took me on a tour inside. They did some first class work. They also built a cabin on an island here in the New River less than 5 miles from me. 

   My wife's first cousin is married to a Bowe who is a cousin to them. He was from Charleston WV and they live up near Akron now.

   I am not into timber framing but would like to see them using wood I sawed for that purpose.

Got my springs mixed up. White Sulfur Springs not Hot Springs. Hot Springs is in VA. Too many spring towns around there for me to keep straight. 

In any event, they are a talented group of people. Like to see some of their work first hand. 

Sounds like you're going to get to saw some material for that style cabin.

These are some clear walnut slabs we milled, and after a year of air drying, kiln drying and finish planing dead flat with our new planer, we put them out for sale yesterday and they are selling very fast, probably 1/3rd sold today, and hopefully as many more tomorrow.

Looks great. I bet you really like your new planer. Great video with your new dust collection system for it. How long and wide are the slabs
