While i was moving my JD440 today, i had a guy come talk too me.. He couldn't believe that their were cable machines still in use.. he Figured they had all been sent for scrap by now.. Where he comes from (Down in Georgia somewhere) cable skidders are gone the way of the dinosaur, grapple skidders are all thats used..

Around here there is about an equal number of each. Most guys that run whole tree chip operations that follow a feller buncher run grapples. I have a cable and i think my next machine will be also unless I get a smoking deal on a grapple machine with a winch.

I have never seen a grapple skidder here.  All selective harvest hardwood is cut and skid with cable skidders, and the plantations are cut to length with forwarders.
