Also if it's around that 40 degree temp & I crank it say 30 seconds or so & wait a couple minutes & keep doing this for 10-15 minutes, when it starts it rev's up like I'd given it a shot of ether. Could it be low compression? One of my Son's has a compression texted for Deitroits & maybe spring we'll see what it has. Anyone know what it should be?

Compression Tester that suppose to say. Hit send to quick👍😎

It is hard to say why it is not starting but if it has good compression and the injectors are timed and you still have problems you could look at the blower/air box pressure, and make sure the injectors are good.

The Detroit "expert" should have checked the oil pressure/relief spring and valve right off. The start up procedure for rebuilt detroit's would have called for you to shut it down for low oil pressure and not try to run it in till you fixed it.

Detroit's do need to be run in to get the rings to seat and that only happens when they are under load not revved up in neutral.

Your first motor may have had bad liner orings. If the head was cracked and it ran hot the liner orings may have melted a bit and started leaking this is very common in detroit 53s

I would make them take the engine back and get my original and rebuild it.

There's no chance the emergency shut off on the blower is tripped or half tripped is there???????

And just wondering how slow is it turning over? A weak armature in the starter will crank to slow it won't build boost.it sounds like there is more fuel then air getting in the cylinders if it's reving once it does start.

Also after it ran & next moring(39degrees out)wouldn't start they figured the fuel was running back in the tank. So out come Expert again with a check valve for the fuel line. In the mean time we pressurized the tank. Had fuel going all the way through & out the head. It was running when he showed up. Puts check valve in & runs about 30 seconds. I ask if valve is in right. After him wanting to first give it a shot of either(which I wouldn't allow that) then wanting to take valve cover off & bleed injectors one of my boys took the valve off & put it in the right way. It made me wonder if he had worked on them much, wanting to bleed the injector, cause when the valve was put it right & we pressurized the tank again fuel was flowing  out the head & started right up.It was job to watch the guy work on it. The manager said it b best for him to figure the problem out rather then us. We checked the emergency shut off. Works good & open all the way. It's a good sized company from by The Great Lakes Area with a few shops. I noticed he put the broken oil pump relief piston in his pocket pretty fast, but not fast enough before I could get a pic of it with my phone. If it didn't run so good after started I'd probly be doing something about it. But I do know somethings not right. Come spring we'll do a compression test & go from there. And the manager did tell me The Expert no longer works there & there still going out on calls to motors the guy had rebuilt. He did say he'd get me another if this one don't work out. Didn't hear any offers that they'd swap it out though.

Forgot to add, they said it's a new starter & looks like it. Seems to spin over plenty fast. Guess it should b checked to see if it's right, cause I'm not believing much of what they were telling me now.

He could have put turbo Pistons in it I guess. if he was that much of a dada. 17.1 turbo Pistons would probably act like that.you should get someone else to set the rack and retime the injectors they can be changed. Sometimes 1.450 works better sometimes 1.470.

Never even thought of wrong Pistons. I did read on this forum about the difference. Is there a obvious difference looking at the 2 Pistons?
