Most people use PowerDVD. It used to come bundled with hardware. Not so much any more, but you can download it for 30 day free trial. Well, I guess you can't Harold but there are some that are smaller that might work for you. Put powerDVD into Google and go down a few links to the cnet page. They show several down a ways on the download page. (easydvd)

Harold, Nero Showtime is what I use.

Try opening "Help and Support" under the start button and type in DirectX in the search window. Then click the links to trouble shooting DirectX. You will get a link to the DirectX diagnostic tool which checks your system.

Unless you have the latest CPU the sound can be choppy (DVD viewing) if you have a virus scanner in the back ground. A no frills DVD viewer can be had for $30 bucks if all attempts are futile. :D

Thanks, Doug. I will check into this.

I bought a new DVD reader-burner, for my Daughter, on my recent trip to Florida. It came with Nero 7 .
I brought the disc here and loaded it on the computer. I HAD the 30 day version. I had deleted all Nero stuff, before installing from the disc.

It said I needed to activate the DirectX, and find the info under the display tab ??? ???

Only display I know about, is, on the control panel.

Believe me, I messed with this for over an hour.  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

  I don't understand why a simple unit can not be installed , without having to be a Computer engineer.  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I will try your advice, SD. I don't like buying stuff from down here, online , with a CC.  ::) ::)

You aren't dumb and dirt is where we come from anyway, so no worries there, either.  ;)  The directions are just poorly worded.  Here is what you do...

Click Start, then click Run.  In the little window that opens, type dxdiag and hit Enter.  A window will open asking you if you want to run blah blah blah.  Click Yes.

Now yer in bidness.  In the window that opens, click the "Display" tab and select whatever it is the directions are telling you to enable.

If after doing that, the application still complains that you aren't running a new enough version of DirectX, then download a newer version.  A quick google search on updating directx will get you that info, if you need it.

Hope this helps.

I solved most of my frustration with Windows Media Player and the various other DVD-specific players by using the free VLC media player.  It will play pretty much any type of media file or disc you throw at it.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Don't know if you are running XP or Vista, but on XP you can check your version of DirectX doing a START--->RUN and typing in DXDIAG.  This will launch a new window with a bunch of info in it.  I think the current version of DirectX is 9.0c.  I mention this because you may need to be current on DirectX in order for VLC to work properly.

Fla._Deadheader

I have DirectX ver.9.0.  I have VLC Media Player. I have no idea what I am doing or needing.

I have to look for the driver disc. I found one with ALL drivers on it, but, it's not manufacturer specific, I don't think.

Really appreciate all the helpful ideas. One day, this will all shake out.  ::) ::) ;D

OK. I downloaded a large update for the VLC program. Still does not work.

I have tried the DirectX enable, but, I get a not available in all the options to enable boxes.

I have a Samsung  reader-burner. HOW do I find the model and whatever else is needed to go online and look for the drivers ??? Should be a list on the computer, somewhere, correct ???

I can not locate the Manufacturers disc. Must have been installed by my Computer guy in Florida, and, he is very sick at the moment.

If it were me, I would download and run this:

http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html

NOTE!  I have never run this particular program before but have run ones like it, in the past.  Anytime you dl a prog off the Internet, you should be cautious.  From a quick look, this one looks okay but understand that the risk is yours.

Install it, run it, and see if it identifies your DVD-RW.  Once you have whatever id it gives (model #, etc), you can then search for a driver for it.

Harold,

Right click on the "My Computer" icon (in Windows version XP and earlier we are talking here). Then a menu pops up to the screen with an item called "Properties" at the bottom on the menu list.

Then, a window called "System properties" comes up.

Click the "Hardware" tab

The click the "Device Manager" button.

Then a list tree comes up with "+" beside each item in the list, there is a "DVD/CD-ROM drives" item, click the little "+" symbol and the tree branches out to show all the CD drives installed.

Double click on the listed drive in that list tree and the driver info window pops up with tabs at the top, one is the "Driver" tab where you click to get into to check for updates and install them or roll back to an earlier version. Many times those OEM drives in computers use a driver written by Microsoft and are on the Windows install disk. I think you get an option to check on your install disk(s), installed hard drives (C:\ D:\ ....etc) or the internet.

Because they are not one in the same. The cd-rom driver (software) controls the drive itself and the file system the drive is capable of read/writing to (DVD,BD,CD-R,HD). The decoder(s) is usually for MP2, MP3, MP3pro, MP4, WMA, AVI file formats (referred to as codecs in the industry). Think of it like a utility that encodes and decodes files into a compressed file format, like winZIP. The CD device (hardware) controller is usually ATAPI or SCSI, that's how the signals are sent over the ribbon cable from computer to drive.

codec being an acronym for coder/decoder.

OK. I read that page you linked to, for a second time. Thanks.

Problem I am not seeing is, This machine WAS playing Mpegs, I guess. I could view videos.

When the motherboard blew, I bought a new one. Installed the same hardware to the same Hard Drive, and was able to view Videos.

WHY, all of a sudden, am I not able to view them ???  Virus or something ???

Thought about resetting the system to a couple months back, when everything WAS working. Probably won't help, if it's saying NO decoder is installed ???

I DID run the Windows XP install disc, but, still no decoder. ???

I just don't see how it could not be there ???

Thanks for all the help you guys are giving me. Maybe this thread will help someone else, in the future ???

A few codecs are sold separately from the main software or because the software you have is a demo or trial they have crippled it with a set duration of use or missing codecs.  So, I believe even under Nero you had to buy the decoder separate from them or it is activated once you buy the software package and enter their key code (long string of numbers and letters) to unlock it. It's like an image format that I use in which my Aerial photos are saved to. I cannot alter or write in that file format, but I can view it. I would have to buy an encoder from Lizard Tech to create those images, which is very expensive as I recall. The file format is MrSID (multi-resolution seamless image database) in my case.

Many times some manufacturers of computers are sold with audio video programs pre-installed and if you wipe the hard drive or swap in a new one all those files you need have to be reinstalled from the recovery disk the manufacturer included with the computer and often the recovery disk will only work for that brand computer and won't function on another brand computer. And often you have to boot your computer off that recovery disk to even get to an install. On mine, I can't access it from windows, everything is encrypted.

Does not look to be your case though, if it worked at first after installation.

Windows Media Player should play those DVD videos.

Harold, was someone messing with the DVD regional settings? On the disk you want to play, is it a commercially packaged DVD? If so, get out the hand lens  ::) no kidding, and see what region it is formatted to.

Be careful farting around with that though because MS in it's interest to control your habits has set a limit on the number of times you can change this setting in Windows, even if you reinstall windows or move that drive to another PC.  :-X

I won't even mention where that change can be made, yet.

I'm thinking, everything was fine, UNTIL I installed the Nero Software.

Wonder if they have written something into the software that would find and control the codec from Windows Media player ???

This is the only logical conclusion I can think of.

Under your Device manager (navigate there as described above) you see an item as highlighted in blue in a branch of the list view under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers.

Double click the "video codecs" branch and see if you have something like this,

And check each one under "properties" to see if they are functioning.

If not try going into Control Panel under the Start button and click the Add/Remove Programs link and then hit the "Add/Remove Windows Components". Scroll down the list and see "Windows Media Player" and see if removing then adding the component works. Might need the Windows Install or recovery disk if a file is missing.

What I'm wondering is if you have different regional disks and you have been playing a regional type, such as "1" for US and Canada and maybe another regional disk that caused the drive to swap region numbers. I think you can swap 4 or 5 times and then the last settings change is set for good. Unless you have a multi-regional drive. Does the last disk you played, that worked, still work when you try to play it?

I don't know where the Directx message your getting plays in this. I've had Nero a long time and it has not interfered with Windows Media Player that I know of. Some of the windows codecs are likely being shared/used by Nero.

Wow.  Yer just havin' all sorts of fun, aren't ya?  Since the Nero eval time expired, have you gone to add/remove programs and deleted it?  Maybe that will help.  Seems like you are having more than just one issue in all of this?

SwampDonkey

When you installed Nero, you may have gotten a message to replace an older version of that codec with the one on the install disk or maybe it's a version for Vista and may not function in older Windows versions. That one that replaced it may not have Microsofts seal of approval. In your "System Properties" there is a "Driver Signing" button under the "Hardware" tab. That's a possibility I suppose. I'm not sure if it's deleted though, I think it's stored and can be rolled back. So reinstalling WMP may put it back.

Referring back to post number 22, to get into "Device Manager".

Double click the "DVD/CD-ROM Drives", then double click the branch under it to your DVD drive.

You should see a tab for "DVD Region". How many changes are left? Should be a line stating "Changes Remaining: _" The spot I underscored in the quotes will show how many times you can change the region before it is permanent. Don't mess with the regional settings fields under it, but was just curious as to how many changes remaining is there, because it seems to me this a possibility that the last disk used changed the region for the last time and only those disks with the same region can be played from now on. If your getting disks from Europe, China and USA and others all those disks will change that regional setting and after 5 swaps your drive will set it permanent and the only way to correct it is to flash the ROM in the drive. This will not be an issue however, if your drive is multi-regional. If it is multi-regional the driver won't show you a warning about making changes to the regional setting.

As I told you some time ago, there are infections that cannot be detected by antivirus/spyware programs.  If you had a confirmed infection/compromise, you have no way of knowing if a Bad Guy installed a different back door.  If that occurs, it doesn't matter if you clean the original infection, they still have a way in.

That being said, this may not be happening in your case.  A computer will autodial to get online for only a certain number of things.  I'm going waaaay back here and my memory is fuzzy but I seem to remember a setting in my modem/terminal program or within Windows itself to allow it to autoconnect if I tried browsing to a web page while offline.  If you have your computer set to autoupdate at a specific time, and if you have it set to autoconnect when needed, that may be all that is going on here.

It is impossible for me to say for sure without actually sitting down in front of the thing.  As for the DirectX package, which version is it?  Updating DirectX may be a good idea but again, I'm not positive what your underlying problem is and don't want to make things worse for you.

SwampDonkey

Yes as Warbird says about the auto dialing to the internet. In your "Network Connections" under Control Panel and under your dialup connection (what ever you named it) you go into "Properties" by right clicking and selecting that menu item at the bottom. Then click on "Advanced" tab and the first and second check boxes in there under "Internet Connection Sharing" will set that capability. Your considered a network user even if your on the host computer. So if you launch IE the dialer initiates if your offline,  same would happen for Windows Auto Update.

Deleted CCleaner, and, am now trying to re-download it. IE keeps dropping the transfer, as usual  ::) ::)

Have the Firefox icon on desktop, but, when I double click it, I just get the hourglass for less than 1 second, then nothing. Waited for 10 minutes for something to happen, so, re-activated IE, much to my chagrin ???  ::) ::)

  Guess it's getting time for the 3 pound hammer  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Are you still unable to do what I suggested to you months ago?  That is, back up your important files, format the hard drive, and reinstall Windows from scratch.  Your system sounds entirely b0rked to me.  Compromised or not, it could use a clean build.

Been going through files, and noticed there are a LOT of
lightscribe" files ???

When I was in Florida recently, I bought a new DVD R?W for my Daughters machine. It was saia plug in. Installed the machine and ran the install disc.

It was Nero 8. The disc installed a "Virtual" drive, and really messed up the computer.  Guy there went through and make it right again.

Then, exchanged that burner-reader for an IDE type connection. Ran Nero 7 for it, and all was well. Brought the disc here, and ran it, because my tyrial version was expired.

Since then, things have gone down the toilet.

Know anything about "Virtual drive" being put on a system ???

I deleted all nero I could find, but, there are many Nero things in files I have found ??? ??? ???

Just want to lay y'all know that I appreciate all the help that is offered  :)

Warbird. I am not comfortable with formatting the drive. IF I knew more, I would consider it. I ran Ccleaner and deleted many files ??? Don't know if that's a good thing yet, but, we will see.

Deleted and removed from the system, Firefox. Went out and re-installed Firefox on the machine. It's running as I write this.

REALLY appreciate the time you spent to help me. THANK YOU  8) 8)

So far, the system is working.

Also, had a connection problem last night and this morning. Called the Internet Access provider and got THAT straighten out.  ::) ::)

That's hopefully enough computer problems for a while. Thanks to all who helped with info and ideas.  8) 8)

Did you check Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control  under the "Start" button? Might be set to off with the new codecs installed.

If it's located on the window that I am viewing, yes. ALL volumes that I can find are turned full on.

I really believe that there IS a virtual drive created on my hard drive.

I need to try to call my guy in Florida, and see what he found on Teri's computer, and, have him tell me what to look for in the files.

I can not copy-paste I found out, today. It's little things that are annoying.

Deselect anything that says anything about digital sound output.  If that is selected and your card has a digital output, it will redirect your sound from normal outs to the digital out.  And if you don't have anything connected to the digital output...  no sound for you.  ;)

Other than that man, I've given you all the help I can remotely.

OK. I have been clicking, unplugging, and talking to this machine.

I finally got the sound to work.  Now, I can HEAR a video but not view it.

I get a window in Media Player, that says :  advrcntr2.dll -file not found, and it IS needed ???

What do I do about this ???  Is this something I can find online or is it in the OS disc and needs to be reloaded ???

When I insert a DVD, the device lights up and spins, but, the one DVD wants to start at about 3/4's the way through the Video ??  I try to set it back to the beginning, but, the indicator returns to the 3/4 area in the bottom on the screen.

This is all Windows Media Player.

On Videolan, I can hear the audio on the DVD, but, can not view it, and I have clicked on ALL buttons, bullets, windows, etc. and nothing helps ???

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated  ;D ;D
