I attended the local forestry association meeting last night and they had a guest from the state association that told us about a enviromental group based out of New York City that is pushing some kind of legislation to declare the Cumberland Plateau area as a Bio-Gem. She explained that to be some kind of preserve that would make this area untouchable to loggers and such. This area is supposedly being chosen based on its beauty, no indangered species or something like that this time. She said that actually, they are trying to get a foothold in the south and will then target areas farther south of us. This hits pretty close to home, my HOME. Actually does include my county.
Have ya'll heard of this term before or know anything about it?
Have ya'll faced anything like this near you? ??? >:(

Never heard of this one, but it sounds like the group that is fronted byRobert F. KennedyJR. The group may be waterkeeper.org .Keep an eye on them they are patiant and are willing to work slow in order to take away land owner rights in the name of enviornmental protection.
I live in the Susquehanna watershed and one of the things they want to do is monitor water use from wells so that it can be taxed.
Together we got this !

Sounds like a big red flag oughta be goin up.  That's a recipe for disaster.  I woud think that the most important ecosystems in the US have already been well identified and preserved.  We don't need more environmental groups barring logging, or any other forest activity, in the name of preservation.

It's my understanding that logging, if done with a proper forestry plan by someone who respects the area they are logging, is beneficial to the forest.  We have had a considerable number of go-rounds with the U.S. Forest Service and the environmental groups here in Vermont,  regarding the outright ban of logging on State land.  I don't think that's good for the forest.

My vague recollection is, in the 1920's and earlier, Vermont was only about 25% forested.  The land was generally well used for farming, with a significant sheep and cattle population.  Now we are over 70% forested, and rising still, and we are asked to not cut trees.  I got into it with an "environmentalist" on a local planning board last night about cutting trees down.  We were developing six (!) building lots on 95 acres, and she wanted to place restrictions on cutting so that there wouldn't be "huge clear cuts" on the property.  Well, it's zoned residential, it's on a mountainside so people will buy the lots to get a view, but just how much do you expect to allow?  She didn't want to respond, just wanted to make sure that the landowners didn't cut "too much".

I think I'm rambling a bit here.  Maybe time for a new thread about biodiversity and the effect of logging on the environment.

Hartwood is a group that hit Daniel Boone National forest a few years ago in Kentucky. Don't know of anybody it benefited. Might do a search probably get better info than I can give off top of my head.

I doubt you will ever get a definition from the "hugger" as (IMO) it is only about their wanting to control what others do, and has nothing really to do with her (their) initial 'protection of trees' disguise. Just my opinion.

I once found myself in a similar discussion, and when I thought I had made a solid (profound ???) statement about 'a tree is a renewable resource' the hugger' from across the conference room bellowed "NOT RENEWABLE IN MY LIFETIME!!!". So, he was thinking of himself, not the future bigger picture.

One of these groups inserted their agenda into the beginning draft of a county-wide future plan for 'contolling' urban sprawl. One paragraph snuck in there that essentially said  "NO CUTTING of any tree over  5" without a permit".  (I assume that was diameter). We did manage to get the paragraph removed, but it was amazing how many reviewed the document, and hadn't 'noticed' that it was there, and/or didn't realize what the impact of that paragraph could be on the landowners. Couldn't remove firewood unless the tree was down on the ground. Couldn't clear a spot for a lawn or a building or just to open up the view, w/o permission.

During the Clinton years Al Gore worked with him to have large tracts of U.S land designated as a WORLD eco system and had ownership essentially transfered to U.N control as a world treasure...I believe some soverng U.S soil now is in this situation in Utah..... :-/ >:(
You are describing the same thing..........

It's better to have it and not need it. Then to need it and not have it.

I've seen this in towns, not counties, but even so, it's a bad idea.  One of the local municipalities insists that natural hedgerows must be maintained, that no trees be cut (even, apparently, if they're dead).  You can't even clear brush.  I think it's a pretty sight, to see an old fieldstone wall meandering along the base of mature trees, free of scrubby brush.  No go, here.

Actually I think those ordinances are put in place solely to protect inexperienced suburbanites from maiming themselves with newly purchased chainsaws from Home Despot...   ;D :D

I believe that Breederman is correct, the lady called the group the NRDC, which would make sense with the Natural Resource Defense Council. Even their name is a farce, it is not a resource if you can not touch it.
There is a sign when you drive into the Smokey Mountains that says "Welcome to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park an International Bio-sphere." I called a state agency to ask them what a bio-sphere was and the response was an area designated to the UN group called UNCES ( or something like that) to study man's effect on nature. I asked why that was needed when man is a part of nature. They had no response to that.
It is apparrent that someone has an agenda that it does not include the good of all. >:(
