It's a 93 escort    :o :o :o

Them wazn't made with longivity in mind.... its amazing its still on the road.   I have an 81 f150 with over 300,000 miles on it.  the trani ( c-6 ) is to stiff to rotate without leverage.... still works fine though, and it keeps the shifter from jumping up and down at speed like alot of older veh's.

FDH may still have the best idea   :D

Glad to hear you found the problem.  I forgot to tell you that it would take some effort to shift the tranny by hand.  So you really do not have a problem there like Don said.  The shifter linkage probably rusted out as it ges wet where they put it.  For that reason I would recommend that you buy new if possible than used as you will find the same problem at the junk yards. :(
