Just wondering? ???
Good question. Unless TJB is your real name, you aught to know. ??? My guess is anonymity. Oh, and Tom was already taken. :D
Maybe you can blame me.
Years and years ago on another forum in another galaxy far, far away, I used my name. I started getting phone calls from people who tracked me down. Most just wanted to visit or to ask me things instead of replying on the forum. I soon tired of this and took to using the handle Mary give me when we first got a sawmill and I took up wearing bibs. I noticed after that a lot of new people used a handle instead of their name.
ErikC, Mine is TJ Brown, I have always signed it TJB. lol
Good reason Bibbyman, people know my name because of my woodwork so I just use it. I will admit that I have had a few people that I could have done without meeting find me, so I did take my contact info off my website.
A quick look at your profile revealed most of your name.... :D
In my case, back when I had a "real paying job", most folks called me "Magicman". I've had it for well over 40 years.
Somewhere there is a thread about "screen" names and such. I'll try to find it.
I thought maybe the T was for Tom, and you were too late to claim it :)
I was shortchanged. TJ is my whole name, initials only. I guess the correct way to write it would be Tj, but I have always wrote it in caps.
Because, we are all figments of your imagination.
Didnt think of that Ranger, guess I better lay off the booze! ;D
OK, I found the thread.....16 pages.....happy reading:

I use a nickname and keep my true identity private because I'm a paranoid freak and I know for a fact that all of you are secretly out to get me. ;D
Some people have a privacy thing.
I personally have no problem with anyone knowing my name.
My real name is Glenn Hosenosedegeswaldos. :D
You can call me by my real name or my nickname, just don't call me after 11.
Thanks Magicman
That's pretty good Moose
Some choose a name that better describes themselves.
If I did not have an Electric sawmill, Electric edger, Electric fork lift, and 2 Electric chain saws......I'd just be Al. How boring it that.
ElectricAl
Are you the Al that Chevy Chase and Paul Simon were singing about?
Simple truth if I used me real name no one would belive a word I said :D :D
Brian
I've used my real name for years, mainly on this forum. Controversial forums I use a handle. I feel I handle myself in a professional manner, so I don't care if people know who I am.
Since I'm in the phone book, I've gotten a few very interesting calls. There was a guy who wanted to fly me over 500,000 acres in Africa to do a timber cruise. There was a woman who was having problems with a consulting forester in PA. A headhunter in CA wanted me to be an expert witness for a client in OR on a patent infringement case. Sawmill development in Africa. And just recently, my opinion on harvesting 30,000 acres of blowdown in Central America.
None of these have actually worked into a money paying job as of yet, but they sure were interesting. They all searched me out through search engines and some pointed right back here to this forum.
I think some of the people on Forums like this don't use their real names because they've
either had a bad experience in the past, or they just don't want to take a chance in the future. ;)
I usually just go straight forward. 8)
I use a contraction of my real name because it makes a better cussword than Dan Gwaltney does. ;)

Yep, but that was back when life was simple.
Cedarman says it all, much better than Richard
My caver friends call me "Fig". Figure out my last name?

Regards Chris
There are some cool nicknames here. I wasn't implying there was anything wrong with using them, I was just wondering why people did. I have enjoyed hearing some of the reason behind the names. The sawmillers and loggers I met growing up were always interesting and fun to talk to and I see all you guys on here are also.
TJ
There are some bloody good ones on here isnt there Mate ;) :D :D ;D ;D ;D 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Got my nickname when I was 18. Worked in a tire business and one of the owners said I wasn't moving fast enough for him while changing truck and tractor tires. He said you move like a dead Indian, if you last here, you will be known as "Tonto". Well, the nickname stuck and I lasted there 21 years and he didn't. Tonto (Chris)
Mary and I were at a forestry show years back. I guy came both days and hung around the Wood-Mizer display. We talked for hours total over the two days. He had a farm, some trees, some logs, some need for lumber, and the desire for a sawmill. It sounded like he was real interested in buying a WM mill. I made what turned out a mistake of giving him my business card and also giving him info to getting onto the Forestry Forum.
He ended up buying a home-made mill from somebody on the Forum I think. But that wasn't the problem. The problem was his "day job" as some kind of broker meant he was in front of the PC all day. He would watch the Forum and when I'd log on, he'd call me. He was a plenty fine guy but I didn't need to take him to rise, if you know what I mean. 'Corse, he had problems with his mill and nobody else to go to. I couldn't help him as I've never seen his mill or wasn't there to see what his problem was. Got to be a real problem. Fortunately, he moved on.
its hard to stay hidden in the witness protection program if i use my real name.

My caver friends call me "Fig". Figure out my last name?
That's easy, Richard! It is obviously Isaac. It's hard to escape association with something so prominent as Sir Isaac's fig cookies.
Trying to avoid all the international law agencies. :D
I'm like Dan in that I use a contration of my real name. Last name Benitz.
Interesting post. On most forums, I use a handle when I sign up. On the few forums I still visit (They are not all run as well as the FF), I wouldn't mind going by my real name. I suppose I use a handle when signing up for the first time because I am just not sure of how things will turn out. I'd just as soon be known by Mike here as I have caught plenty of ribbing over my handle (bread maker, bird marker, bridge marker, etc.). Wait, I think I'd rather just keep it as brdmkr. It is more fun that way!
Putting my 2 cents in, I've stolen/used a name from history... as a youngster I read a biography on a military genius who was feared and revered by friends and enemies alike, he changed the way of warfare in his time, brought great prosperity (and admittedly a great hardship) to his country and kinsmen, revolutionised a huge chunk of his countries history, his foundations have been credited to his people being able to hand the British Empire a whole hearted smack-down when the Empire seemed like is was taking over the world.
He was called 'Sigidi' (yeah I know, a bit over the top for little old me, I'm not about to wreak that kind of change, but I like it history, romance and unique-ness about it)
I like Chris (aka Meadows Miller) sign with my 'reall' name ;)
Oh and FYI "REALL" is a combination of Rebecka (my wonderful better half coming first in everything I do) and Allan ;)
whats wrong with richard newton? its better than richard caranium.
i use my company name red oaks lumber but, my name is steve hubin iif anyone has stones enough to look up my phone number and call me it will be the most informative hour long conversation you have ever had
I use my real name because it's one of the few things that I can still remember ;D
Actually, we don't use our real names. My name is really Jeremiah, Jeff's name is Frank, Dan's name is Jim, Swamp Donkey's name is Sue and Mooseherder's name is Wiley. Charlie's name is really Cinderella and Ron's name is Ron, but he is the other Ron and the other Ron is him. They swapped names.
Like Ron, I have had some real interesting phone calls from folks who think an east Texas forester has knowledge of forestry in South and Central America (they didn't offer enough money or security). All were gone after I named my price, funny how that works. And phone calls from folks from all over wanting forestry help (free advice) on one problem or the other.
My name and phone numbers are on my web page, and I have not traced one call back to here.
Oh, and the Texas Ranger avatar comes from when I was a state forester and the folks would call the Forest Ranger, so I changed that to represent the GREAT STATE OF TEXAS.
I just found out my real name is not what I thought it was :o
My Mother has called me Gerald Charles for 60 years but the Canadian Government has me listed as Charles Gerald ??? The only way they will turn it around is if I do a legal name-change ::)
I have been warned I may have a problem when I apply for social security. :(
How come your government thinks it knows more than your Momma? :D
In my case, The FF was the first forum I joined before buying my sawmill. I had to go to the DeepWoods of northern Minnesota where our cabin was to cut and mill lumber so I figured DeepWoods was a good name to go by. I never thought of using my real name. But now that we live at our cabin full time and I plan to get into sawing more, I guess one way of getting a reputation would be to use my real name which is Les Javener.
And what makes you think Maple Flats isn't my real name?
Dave
because Lester uses it?? :-\
When I told the lady at the registry office (whom I have known for years) that my Momma calls me Gerald she gave me that look and said
"You are who the Government says you are." :)
James Gary Mills here
cut and sell wood hence Woodmills got the vanity plate too
just call me frank

Real name is Warren. Handle is Warren. But, will answer to Wayne, Juan, Warden, etc...
This is the only forum I regularly participate in. Don't have all of the knowledge and skill other folks on the Forum have.
(That's why I am here. To learn...) So no worries about unsolicited offers from folks I don't know to travel to far away places. 8)

Always remember: Even if you are not paranoid, that does not mean they are not out to get you... :D
A whole new set of circumstances to worry about. :D
I was going to use my real name, Bob, but I was afraid I would get the letters reversed. ::)
Well they don't because people like TJB come around and vist while they are not at the mill. ;D (sorry I missed you) So if they use a nickname maybe you can not find them. I just hide in plain sight.
I am the ARKANSAWYER and it was a name my wife came up with for the company. People from Arkansas are Arkansawyers and there was a story that just came out about it in the Ozark Mountianeer mag. I am not hiding as I have my website listed as well as where I live and work.
When the sawmill was at home I was a bit hard to find. But still people found me like Bibbyman even though he had to get a guy from Texas to show him where I lived. Now I am not so hard to find.

Then you get on TV and the phone will ring for quite a while.
Then hang your sign out on the busiest road around and hang on. All kinds of people will show up.
But there are those who do not want to be found becasue they are larger on the computer then in real life. Like the country song of the guy in the basement of Mammas house who is 6'4" and quite the deal. We have seen them come and go from sites and Bibbyman gets up set when I talk about his Boy. ;D I do miss him sometimes. The best thing about this site is they do not last long and the cream rises to the top here.
Arkey, I'm glad you put the credit where it is due for that moniker of yours. You can tell your Wife that I have declared her to be the Champeen Name Caller, and that's pretty high praise coming from the #1 Cussword in the World. ;D
lol some pretty good stories here. ARKANSAWYER, we will be back up around your area in 3 or 4 weeks. Taking my kids camping at Buffalo Point
