Title: saw collar question
Post by: rpg52 on April 16, 2017, 06:09:44 PM
Long story, but I'll make it short - the saw collars on my Belsaw M-14 were exposed to rain for a long time and got rusted.  To re-machine them, do I need to take off the mandrel?  Or, can I remove the "fast" collar by heating the collar and cooling the arbor?  How much taper should there be on the bearing surface?  I see the numbers .002 to .003 mentioned in Lunstrum.  Is that what I should try for?  Thanks!

The best way is to machine them right on the saw.
I took a cross slide off a lathe and bolted it down to the floor
right next to the collars. Machined them right in place.
The will make up for any shaft wobble.

I agree but if the bearings are not in perfect shape it should come apart to replace them. If so don't clean shaft under bearings because it's probably under size all ready. In this case I use 609 locktite.

Also, don't remove the fast collar, I did that once and when we shrunk it back on it never held [it spun]  , Doug
