I've been working with this Sycamore Stump for about a week. Got'er all sanded down.
The top is a Red Oak cookie that has been drying for over 20 years....hard as a brick and as heavy as an Anvil.
I got the cookie from my Dad who got it from his old home place from a tree in families back yard.

I was gonna use it for the table top but I'm thinking it's a little to small in diameter....26 inches.
I just sent Scott Smith a PM hoping he has a cookie in the 40ish inch range.

We'll see. Got my fingers crossed.

Looks pretty cool, how bout some kind of band/breadboard around the outside with a skirt? Make the surface larger without incuring the additional weight?

I thought that stump was growing out of the floor.  :o

Great table. Are you going to oil it or leave it natural? I would have to watch my dog around that table because it looks like a tree growing out of the floor.

I'm still looking for a larger diameter top....so I won't stump my toe on the stump.  :D

Finish???? I have no idea.  :)......yet.  ;D

Does the top have to be round?

Yes. I figured the ratio of the slant of the roots coming from the stump to the floor were in proportion to the diameter of a cermetrical top would be lacking if a square top were installed.
47.4° xMC squared(5.76 +[6.437 divided into 13.5] x11.12)= round top.

See what I'm talking about. This is why I'm looking for a round top.

Ask WDH....He can explain it better than me. :)

You need to cube the moisture content.  Just squaring it makes for an undersized top.

a 4 inch slice of this would work real nice. It's red oak, about 48 inches across. We can work out a deal, but you gotta come to loosiana to get it.  ;D
The only thing available to slice it is an old fashioned 2 man crosscut..

Poston,

You and Piney go ahead and start without me.

Be real careful and do a real good job.

I'll take two of those slabs, but at Piney's price (we all know how much YOU charge for slabs...)

I did the math. You are both wrong Trees just don't grow that big.  :D  I believe one of your X should be a %  and squared should be square "root"  ;)

Is it sold yet? Looks good. Real good.I suppose the stump came from what the tree service drops off?

You need to take into acount the difference in growth rings prior to X the % when taking moisture count, as that will afect the °[({¯})] in the substraction of the heat amount you used to dry it.

This is my first post. Joined yesterday and have been looking at all the beautiful projects that ya'll post. This is really a neat place to be able to ask questions and learn about things that I am interested in. Wow! Between this forum and pinterest I may have to retire so I can surf the net and make pretty things. 8) Love, love this stump. I guess I will have to learn my wood because I thought it was a cypress knee instead of a sycamore.
Thank you GOD for blessing me much more than I deserve.

POSTON WIDEHEAD

Welcome to the Forestry Forum nmericle53.
Yep.....it is a Sycamore stump and it really sanded down quite well......the wood is really soft. It does look like Cypress,
from a distance......and Texas.  ;D

I'm glad to meet ya buddy!  smiley_thumbsup

I am waiting on another friend/member who will be sending me some pics of a 40" cookie he has......it may work for a top.
I had also thought about a wagon wheel top with glass on it or use the stump for a pedestal to stand a carved bear on.

David, the photo's are in your inbox.

For the rest of the "enquiring minds", here is the photo that I just sent to David. The white oak cookie is oval shaped, 38" x 50".  Thickness varies between 3" to 5-6".  If David doesn't get it, I'm planning to soak it in borate and CuNap, and then use it for a walkway.

Yeah, you're right it was maple. I reckon it got cold. Spent some time putting up a heat lamp and new cedar shavings for the dog and goats under the shed. Just went out to check on them.......their all sitting out in the field under the stars, not the heat lamp!!!!!!!!!!!
