O.K. Folks, I have our new program almost ready to go for adding internet forestry site links. What I need no is categories.
What do we need? What sub categories to we need? Do we limit them only to those dealing with wood?
Would anyone like ( or be willing to :D) to draw up a directory tree?
I was thinking ::) maybe 3 main categories: Forestry, Other, and personal pages of members.
The Forestry one could have several sub-categories, like:
Government sites
Equipment Manufacturers
Equipment Dealers
Wood Product Manufacturers and Dealers
Don't forget to put in a warning about inappropriate sites being removed at your discretion.
Here is the link to what I am working on. Its not really functioning yet. I can ad links but nobody else can.
This should give everybody an idea of what we need. It is in the style of yahoo. I figure anything that is closely or remotely related to what we do here is fair game as a category or sub category.

Way Cool, Jeff! 8) 8) 8)
Now you can just go over to Kevin's site and steal all his links to put on there. I've been using his site for links for a while now(after reading the rest of it, of course). He's done a good job with it.
Don't tell him I said that. I don't want him to get a swelled head, or nuthin. ::)
Great idea Jeff! It's looking good. After you get it installed I will probably have some Woodworking sites you can add. 8)
So does anybody have a directory tree drawn out for me yet?

So, that's what a Directory Tree looks like...........I was wondering.
:P
Hey, you won`t find that Flora in Floridia.
looks like a deciduous, conifer-hardwood to me..........Nope, that's foreign to Florida..........must come from some other country. :P
Matter of fact, it looks out-of-this-world........where are you from Kevin? :-/ :D
Tom,
You`ve heard of the land down under ?
Well I`m from the land up yonder. :D
Oh yeah, I remember. I saw you sitting on top of one of "them thar' hills" ::)

Here's my 2 cents. You have to watch how big this thing gets. Some time or another, someone is going to have to check those sites to make sure the links are still valid. I hate going to sites that have bad links. To give you an idea, Forestworld.com has links to 6000 forestry related sites.
My tree would look something like this:
Foresty
Associations
Schools
Federal government
State government
Foreign
Equipment
Co-operatives
Consultants
Forums (?)
Logging
Associations
Equipment
Low Impact
Log Prices
Loggers
Forest Products
Associations

Band saws
Circle saws
Swing saws
Chain saw mills
Lumber Prices
Lumber Mills
Paper companies
Veneer products
Log cabins
Non-timber forest products
Wildlife
Recreation
Water quality
Mushrooms & Herbs
Member Sites
Consultants
Loggers
Mills
Misc
Misc
I think it is important to put the member sites in a seperate category. It would help members of both this forum and Timberbuyer.com get a little bit better notice for their support and effort.
Now that's a tree!
Any additions anybody? This looks good Ron.
. Here is a question.
Do we allow anybody to submit a link, or only established forum members? Say 50 posts and up? I know that don't sound fair if you only have 10 posts The software does not immediatly add the link. It has to be reviewed by an admin, and then he simply hits an add or delete button. Sort of the forum Link God. I lean towards only established members so that this directory will reflect us.
If the links are going to be reviewed, then what difference would it make who submits a link? I wouldn't want to overlook a good link from a guest, for example.
On the other hand, you don't want to be swamped with links. That will probably happen initially, but will taper off as time goes on.
Me thinks you right

Guess it depends on how much you really want to break it down. But do so before you start getting links.
Gordon
Alright, I just added what feels like a bazillion links. Still got plenty more I could add, but I held off. I don't want to be adding the same links everyone else is.
Gordon,
Is there any category that you are light on and need some links?
How many is a Bazillion, Swamp?
My Grandaddy, bless his heart, used to aggravate my Grandmamma to no end as he would teach us kids how to count. He would say, "units, tens, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions, billions trillions, rat pillions, rabbit pillions, goat pillions..........
"FLEM........!!! you know there's no such thing........don't teach those kids that.
"Well, it's not hurting anything. When you get that many zeroes, it doesn't matter anyway."
Swamp thanks for the links, to answer your question your more than welcome to add a bazillion more. I've also added what seems like a bazillion but the counter says it's not a bazillion yet, so keep um coming and thanks for taking the time to add some..
For any of you that are coming into this thread late here is the link to the links.
