I found a skid steer in my budget that will get me by on a temporary basis.
Has a gas engine that needs an oil pan gasket.
As you know I'm no mechanic.
Is that a hard and costly job to fix?
Thanks Bruno

What gas motor? Never done an oil pan on that BobCat but having worked on them plenty I would think pulling the motor would be in order. There isn't much room or access to get the pan out cleaned up and reinstalled.

Twenty minutes to change the gasket.  Several hours to remove and reinstall the engine.  It will have to come out.  Two big men could wrestle it out onto a platform, but it is way easier to do with a forklift.  It's possible to do it with a chain hoist if you can anchor it high enough to swing the engine out, but harder to put it back in.  Change the engine mount cushions while you have it out.  Anything with a gas engine is probably pretty old.  Make sure you can get parts for it.

It is a 4cyl Ford industrial engine

its fairly unusual for a oil pan gasket to leak unless the bolts came out or are loose. i would look further up on the motor. i have seen oil pressure sending units leak before. not often.

Pretty common on older Bobcats for the motor mounts to sag and the oil pan to get close to the bottom tub, a small rock or something gets wedged in there and rubs a hole thru the pan.

Pulling the motor out of a bobcat isn't too bad, but also not easy. They are low to the ground and small/congested to get in and work on.

I did a ring gear on a 742 . 4 bolts 2 water hoses gas line and about 4 wires . pulled it in less than 2 hours . Putting it back you need the cab up and someone needs to steer the coupler into place . I wonder if it may have a seal leaking . Pan gaskets don't leak very often . I would do a seal if I had the engine out . only have to remove the flywheel Good luck .

The ford industrial is a 1.6L ford kent engine from britain... The same thats been in formula ford race cars for ever.  Distributors are obsolete and so are rebuilders.   Actually i just searched and someone finally made a new aftermarket for $130.  At the time i had to buy $300 pertronix units and they werent reliable.  And now i have to mail order their fancy pants high price cap rotor and wires each time.  Tenant sweepers and some wood chippers and such used this engine.  Some parts from a pinto will work over the counter.  There is a good industrial rebuild parts supplier in worcestor mass i cant recall the name of who has hard engine parts based off serial number, unlike autozone et al.

The engine must come out to do the pan and probably the pump drive ujoint which wipes out the fan and fan housing if it frags. Fan housing is obsolete.  The whole machine is actually.  Bobcat couldnt get me hydraulic springs for the big 5 hose valve under the seat which youll surely need to fiddle with if its that version.

I honestly hope you dont buy it.  Im a dang good mechanic and its gave me fits.  The hydraulic system layout of the 5hose valve was completely changed in just a few years because the hidden filter setup had too many issues.  If this machine has sat dry with no hyd fluid for any period of time the poppet seats will have rusted and then wont seat and none of it can be sourced new. I had to find creative ways to lap a lot of rusty seats under the cab which is painful to neal on and reach thru hardpipe spaghetti.  The main loader valve is buried and very difficult to change a line on.  Blow a hardpipe, pull the engine.

also the gasser just dont have the power.  If youre in 16ft hardwood itll probably only lift a 14" log max.  All the handle bushings are probably shot, so itll likely creep and never be in adjustment until those are replaced, skidsteer solutions has them.  And another thing, the mechanic kids at the dealer are too young to have worked on them so they wont know a thing when you call with a basic question.

The hoof governor also grenades on those, thats like $800.  And the carb sucks.  The choke cable is probably froze, and i think there was a NLA fuel shutoff solenoid in the float bowl i had to remove, tap and plug.

I really hope you pass. I would never go back and do it again, heck id rather still be making payments on a good machine because i really still need to replace mine after hundreds of hours working on it.

A 743B is the lowest bobcat i would consider worth the trouble.   One with the kubota and the updated hydraulic layout.  It has one big radiator sized hose feeding the loader pump when you lift the seat, not the aluminum block.  Trust me bruno this is a problem you dont want!  Please dont do it.
