A few years back the army worm hit and pretty much was the end of the old trees. They only had sapwood left on the main trunks after awhile. Then the chipmunks stashed stuff in the  hollowed out part inside. I cut the old tree trunks down and cleaned up the orchard and replaced the apples with yellow birch. I've tried grafting a few years ago, but nothing took.
