The wife & I was talking this morning about GOOD molasses syrup,They use to be alot made around here ,But not any more.Once a place made it called Sand Mountain syrup .Seen it all over the country,Not any more. The older people retired or died off & the land it was on was beside of a main Highway was sold off.
Just one of them things that is getting to be a thing of the past, :'(,
I've alway love the syrup,But don't have a clue where to get any now,Atleast the good kind.
I'm not wild about the ribbon cane ,But now I'd be happy to get it digin_2,Anyone know where to get any ?

I had to google molasses syrup, because I never heard of it. I looked in the cupboard, and have Brier Rabbit's molasses, full flavor unsulphured. I use it on waffles once in awhile. I kind of take it that is the same thing. I just never heard it called syrup before.

bama20a

I may be wrong (most of the time I am ;D),But I think the molasses you have is alittle stronger than the syrup type. Also darker in color. Mark,,,,,

That maybe, but if you ever want to "adopt" a calf onto a different momma that Brier Rabbit molasses is your best friend  ;).

I'm pretty fond of Steins myself. We get some local made sorgham here, but it just tastes like syrup.

We always called Sorghum "molasses".  Sugarcane was always "syrup", but that is just a local thing.  Sorghum was always much stronger and personally, I never cared for it.  To me, it was making people food out of cattle food.  Sugarcane syrup is much milder, but both depend upon who was doing the cooking.

Google shows it both ways.

Bama20a Where are you located. By you knowing about Sand Mt. Syrup I'm guessing close to North Alabama..I live in the Ider, and Henager area.. About a mile from me there is a syrup mill that two brothers make syrup at ever year. They just cut the cane last week. I will get you their info if you want just let me know..they have good syurp..

My friend Tony will be making molasses at 6 in the morning for another man, I got off work long enough to help make some last year, this is the Youtube video of it,I did the narrating.   "T&R Farm Sorghum Making 2011 Part II"  Good stuff with some buckwheat pancakes, I love it.

I prefer Blue Ribbon cane syrup.  Just picked a couple of pint jars at the flea market.  These were made by Anthony's Syrup,  11191 Hwy 21 North Philadelphia, MS.  39350.  I was born in Louisville, MS about 25 miles North of Philadelphia.  Also picked up a quart of Sorghum.  Produced by the Mazelin Family, 4570 Muddy Pond Rd.  Monterey, TN 38574.  931-863-3859.  No additives.  Both are good on a scratch made cat head buttermilk biscuit with real butter melted on it.  Best chased with a tall glass of cold milk.

I've been making sorghum syrup for the last 5 years with some local old timers.  What a blast.  De-head and de-leaf the cane, cut the cane, take to the very old horse drawn press that has been converted to briggs powered.  Then cook the juice over fire for 5-6 hours then enjoy.
This year because of the drought the syrup was different than normal.  More of a jelly type syrup.

My great grandfather and grandpa used to make it until they both passed.  I have sense moved out of the mountains and am stuck in the big city now (2 more years).  Here is where I order mine from.  Great folks and great syrup.

Y'all talking about black strop molasses?  Terrible stuff, granddad thought it was its own food group, used it on dern near everything.  Tasted like cough syrup.

Looking up Blackstrap molasses, there appear to be good benefits.
I recall having it as a kid on toast in the 40's and didn't object to it, but then food was scarce as well as the money to pay for it. Didn't have a government dolling out money so our family could eat out at a restaurant or fast food place as we have these days.
There were even people walking door to door asking for work so they could get a meal or a few pennies to live on.
We didn't have cough syrup, that I recall.   ffcheesy ffcheesy

I dislike any strong syrup such as Sorghum and most Sugarcane syrup from the local boilers.  Blackstrap is OUT.  I actually prefer Maple Syrup thanks to you Glaciated Guys.  food6
