Title: More details on chainsaw mill setup by OP Caudlefarm
Post by: Northeaster on January 04, 2020, 01:33:03 PM
Great site by the way... I read alot of threads as I rebuilt my saw and they were hugely useful!  Thanks to all!)

I am hoping Caudlefarm will indulge members with more pics of his setup.  He mentioned taking the top of of the mill to do these large logs.  It looks like it worked really well but i would also ;like to see his mil with the top on...i.e. millings thinner slabs to see how it is setup and how it works.

I just rebuilt an early Stihl 064 and am planning on fabricating a chainsaw mill in the next couple of weeks.  I had planned on making a Granberg style mill - albeit welded to fit my 36" bar, and not adjustable as that is as bit as I will likely go..
I have a nice maple log about 3.5' in diameter by 12'long or so waiting for me..
I do plan on drilling the bar, rather than clamping it, for ease of chain removal and I watched one video where the guy unbolted the tip end to allow passing a temporary wider section and the bar and chain stayed fairly true in the cut until he was able to bolt it on again.
Love to see other mills / ideas like in this thread and would love a few more pics and details if possible!

I drilled my bar and never thought about unbolting and manually holding it mostly true, I normally ended up starting on the other end, working up to the wide spot, and then manually getting it with the mill completely removed after the fact.

I will say I got my behind kicked trying to drill they bar.  I'm normally from the buy often and dont care if I break it drill bit club (I lose things often), I dont think you need to follow my footsteps.  Start small get through it, and a step bit or carbide helped me get through it, only took about 1.5 hours for 2 holes.

thanks for the reply!  yeah, i have read quite a few threads on drilling the bar, and trying to keep the bit cool, using heat sinks, etc.  I haven't got around to drilling it yet, nor making the mill.  I will use my  drill press on its slowest setting if or when i do it, starting small and watching the heat..
i had a leaking fuel hose / tank pickup hose at the grommet and want to get the new one installed and make sure the saw is working well before i start on the project.
i am toying with mill design ideas as well, so we will see what i have time to build in the next month or so.
