here is a good old home made aussie buzz saw, motor and gearbox from an old truck, dif on the bottom end, she swings anything up to a 48" blade.

this saw is still in use and is used everyday.

used for breaking down big logs to go onto there woodmizer or for cutting long beams.

in the pic he is making the first cut on a 40' spotted gum 10 x 8.

the blade will actualy spin on its axis at the diff so it will cut horasontaly.

there beasts to operate and have maimed many a man, and a few dogs.

there were a few commercially made models the most famous by mobilco used an enclosed driveshaft, other just had long V belts that twisted when you swung the blade over.

Old Hilly

Aaah Weisy, those were the days. There used to be quite a few blokes cutting sleepers for the railway with swing saws (as we called them then) but like the small sawmills, they are almost all gone now. What a diference 20 years makes...... :(

weisyboy

yep and tehy did a good job and were quite safe is made and used properly.

my uncle got cut off at the knees when his son was trying to cut a tree down with one, kicked back.

you would be surprised how many of these saws are still running around the place, there are still some battlers out west.

things sure have changed and im sure its not for the best.

Rig it to climb cut, get a really long log, and you have your own personal aircraft.  :)

You got that right- brave or not, I wouldn't even like to watch one of those in action, afraid to see Weisy's uncle mishap repeated.

Weisy: what did your uncle do when he all of a sudden found himself shy a couple leg parts?  Seems like instant death to me, but then, you guys south of the equator are pretty tough...   :) :)

If his uncle is anything like Carl, he probably looked at the legs twitchin around on the floor and said, well we're almost finished felling this tree, be a shame to stop now, so come on mate get it finished!!!
Always willing to help - Allan

weisyboy

they got him to the hospital and he was fine, well as fine as a farmer could be without his legs.

i bet they finished that tree at some stage.
