562XP short block drilled but not tapped
« on: June 30, 2021, 08:56:33 PM »
Lost another PTO side bearing so I'm changing out the short block & updating the air filter.
All was looking good 'til I got to the carb floor. 4 untapped holes. Got to looking and found 4 more.
2 at the the coil & 2 at the chain brake. Strangest part was the chain brake screws were started
but without threads.

As a side note: I found the impending bearing failure before the meltdown.
When rolling chain by hand I noticed the chain would do slack and then re-tighten.
Obviously uncaged ball (or balls) in the bearing.

My vendor tells me that they are all sent unthreaded as the screws are self tapping.
Could make sense if new screws were supplied. Only the two for the chain brake were.
Plus all the other holes were tapped.

That's normal; how they've always come.

Sorry if I threw out a bit of a red herring here but I was surprised to see that half of the holes untapped.
The good news is I did get them all in and the saw is back in action.

They are untapped, a soft material formed when the right screws are inserted and ran to tightness. Actually theoretically the best possible scenario.

So a little dab of Locktite should do the trick on the tapped threads as half were.
