Maybe English walnut? Haven't seen one buttress like that but that's what came to mind with the wood.

I don't think it's walnut based on the leaf description he gave me.

Could it possibly be yew?
That is possible.  I'm working to get tree/leaf pics.
Talked to him again and he told me he plugged it into one of those tree identifier apps when it was still standing and got Australian Blackwood.  So maybe something in the Acacia family?

Does look acacia-like.  Pore structure would indicate an ornamental import, most likely tropical.

Do you mind elaborating on how you're able to draw that conclusion from the pore structure?

Think WDH suggesting that pore structure, if looked at, would give you more information to id.

Kinda looks like honey locust but the bark does not.

Does look like Tasmanian Blackwood (an Acacia) . The different coloured bands in the heartwood is a common feature in that species.

It's a good hardwood, related to Hawaiian Koa

I see it's listed as an invasive species in California, so it certainly grows there, and you don't have to feel guilty about cutting one down.  ;)

The wood and open pores look a bit like Enterolobium cyclocarpum (paroda, ear pod, monkey ear, guanacaste).  It goes by several aliases but the bark on yours looks a different from the ones we have milled.  If you have the urge to cough when around the dust from sawing or sanding the dry wood, this may be what you have.
