Just read a great article for simple, low tech layman's approach of sampling techniques to calculate basal area and mean stand density and comparing these numbers to ideal stocking levels.

This was in my latest issue of Independent Sawmill & Woodlout Management magazine.

Not quite sure I completely understand all the graphs yet, but will try to get into the woods and try the coffee can lid "prism" thingy.
