Log was dumped at my place and I cut into it.  Maybe sweet gum?   ::)   Grain looks too dark.

Ring porous hardwood so not sweetgum (diffuse porous).  Looks more like elm, but can't be sure.  Need real close up pic of the grain and an end grain pic of a clean slice of the end grain using a razor knife.

How about sassafras?

Excellent call, JohnW.  The wood is discolored by the stain, but the bark does look like sassafras.  That may be it.  Elm would have the latewood pores arranged in wavy bands.  Sassafras would not.

It would be hard to mistake the odor of sassafras.

Odor? I like the bark for sassafras too but never sawed one (of the few) that showed up with that much color. Typical is either a light olive greenish cast or a light honey amber color.
