I'll have to ask my partner in the tool business, if he intends to get some more from his supplier.
He purchases all the tools, including the handles.
So I don't know where he gets them.

I believe he is still away from home, at his site where he is building his retirement timber frame home.
When he gets back, I'll ask him.

Last time he was here I asked him what was up with the handle supplier, and he told me that he didn't have any more, or wasn't making any more. And we haven't found a replacement handle maker, as yet.
Sorry for such a late response to your question. I though I had posted a reply a while ago.

I am interested in the item #'s M187B and M187C. I am new to some of this and want to make sure I can do what I want to do with these. My thinking is to use them to bore 1 1/2" and 2" holes in timbers (for morticing) to construct a small timber frame shed. Would these suffice for that? Do you have bits that would work with these handles? WHat range of bits both in shank style and bit size will each of these handle? Any other information would be great to have. Regarding some of the other T handles with no bits in them do you have bit(s) for them at all? Again I am green so anything you can tell me would be helpful.

Thanks,
Reggie Ogg (new member)

Reggie

On another note - Do you still have the corner chisels left? I can not seem to locate the pi for them - Am I missing them some how?
Thanks,
Reggie

You are correct that these T- handles can be used with bits for boring out mortises.
We do have some bits on hand with the ends that are shaped to fit into these handles and make it so that you can twist the handle to bore a hole.
I'll have to check the list and or box and see what sizes with the proper ends for the handles we have left, and get back to you tomorrow.

In the mean time can you send me an email via the regular email system so that I can send you more information about the procedures for purchasing out tools?

Thanks for your interest in our tools.

What that dry white oak Jim?

Jim is correct in that, this situation is the toughest.  You want to have a sharp bit (you will learn to sharpen them and keep them sharp), and keep your momentum going.  Stopping and starting is more difficult though not always unavoidable.  Soft woods and green wood will be easier of course.

10-4 Jim cast iron is no good for anything that recives much impact, cast steel on the other hand ain't terrible but I perfer forged(hand forged) being a bladesmith. :D
The way its rusted makes me very suspect that is cast iron and not steel at all.

Hey Jim,

I've been looking for a good draw knife to begin my debarking adventures. Right now I have a vintage 8 incher that is not very deep. I keep seeing people with "deep" and heavy looking draw knifes. I think I need one of those. Does one of those fit the bill? Thanks

- Bryce

Jim_Rogers

Most of the draw knifes we sell people use to debark wane on timbers. The are around 8 to 10" long.
I'm not sure if this is what is best for what you're debarking or not. It's up to you.

Hi Jim. I like the idea of the flat timber framer's layout tape measure with the 10" burn. Is the tape available in metric, or perhaps decimal inches (1/20" as per Steve Chappell's tape)?  Cheers.

For me the M556 peg hole mirror is a beautiful thing.  I have struggled most of my adult life to drill holes perpendicular to the exposed surface.  First time through with this thing I realized how far I had to move my head to look at the drill bit alignment 90 degrees away from wherever it was I started, and it is a long way.

Mine shipped with the mirror wrapped in shipping foam and the foam in a manilla envelope, then the envelope in a shipping box.  After the test drive I was able to put the mirror back inside the foam inside the envelope, and then I put that up in my saw till between a couple saws, so the mirror- though it will get scratched someday- isn't going to get scratched just laying around the shop waiting to go back to work.

I mentioned the foam and envelope in my thank you note to Jim, I hope they all ship that way.  The new holdfast has only been here a couple hours.  i am going to spend some time with it before I write a review.

Hi Jim

I've purchased a timber boring machine. I think it's a Snell. I need a 1-1/2" bit for drilling out the mortises and a 1" bit for pins. Would you have any bits that would be suitable. Are the bits interchangeable between different makes of machine?

Thanks

John D

Most adze handles and heads are made so you can remove the handle from the head so you can sharpen the cutting edge. Some have a wedge holding the head on the handle. If you find one with a wedge, don't loose the wedge.
My personal adze does not have "lips" or a round edges known as a lipped adze.

You can buy them online from several different sources.
You can find them at antique shops, and or flea markets.

Good luck with your search.
