David,   with the type hook you are using, the farmers rolled eye with a couple of cable clamps is just fine.

I use this same thing. 1/2 inch to 5/8 (pink - colour coded for size) Ferrell and wedge. Costs about $30 Canadian. Reusable. I use combo electric take and zip ties to temp hold it until it tightens up on a hard pull. Then trim it down with a cut off  disc. Not as quick as a knot but does a nicer job. Takes about 20 minutes if all goes well.
